Three Charged With Violating Hawking & Peddling Ordinance

OSWEGO, NY – On April 1, shortly after 3 p.m., Oswego Police were notified of a suspicious person(s) traveling door to door soliciting the sale of energy.

Several individuals were located, and after an investigation were determined to have been violating the city’s Hawking / Peddling Ordinance.

It shall be unlawful for any person, except as provided in § 180-3 below, within the limits of the City of Oswego to act as a hawker, peddler or solicitor or to conduct a transient business or flea market as herein defined without first having obtained a paid for, and having in force and effect, a license thereof.

The following subjects were released on $100 bail and are due back in Oswego City Court on April 27:

Tori D. Wiles, 26, of 2814 Bronx Park, East Bronx, NY 10467

Joshua M. Whipple, 23, of 4782 Haverton Lane, Liverpool, NY 13090

Robert H. Francis, 22, of 65 W 96th St., New York, NY 10025

In the city of Oswego, a person found guilty of such offense (Hawking / Peddling Without a License) may be punished by a fine of not more than $1,000 or by imprisonment not exceeding 15 days, or by both fine and imprisonment.

According to Police Chief Michael J. Dehm Jr., “Each of the defendants in this case were reportedly working for a company called Direct Energy, but were found to have been going door to door on the city’s eastside soliciting sales without a permit. I advise all citizens to be wary of those coming door to door without a permit, offering to do work or with deals that sound too good to be true. People should always ask for references so they are not being taken advantage of. If you are at all unsure of a persons credentials, or if you are experiencing undue pressure or tactics to make purchases, or if something just doesn’t seem right, notify the police immediately and we will take the extra step to investigate their legitimacy. ”

    I believe the word you were looking for is wary although I must admit I am weary of unsolicited attempts by others to sell me things I don’t need or want as well as wary of anyone engaging in such activity.
