OSWEGO, NY – George F. Johnson, 86, a resident of Oswego, passed away on Friday May 11, 2018, at the St. Luke Health Services.
Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late George T. and Emma (Matteson) Johnson and was a graduate of the CBA in Albany.
He was employed with General Electric in Syracuse, Marathon Corporation, was the assistant manager at Loblaws for 20 years and was a custodian at Oswego Middle School for 20 years.
Mr. Johnson was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving on the USS Wisconsin during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the USS Wisconsin Association, St. Paul’s Church, American Legion #268 and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians.
He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed watching SU basketball and curling.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Joan Wallace; five children, Susan (Paul) Stanley of Oswego, Bernard (Elaine) Johnson of Oswego, Michael (Susan) Johnson of Oswego, Daniel (Sandra) Johnson of Brewertown and Kathleen (Bruce) Shafer Jr. of Oswego, grandchildren, Sara Stanley, Stephanie Hayes, Nicole Hogan, Michael Johnson Jr., Brian, Steven and Greg Johnson, Patrick, Kaela and Megan Shafer; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Link.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from St.Paul’s Church.
Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at St. Paul’s Church on Tuesday from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

I didn’t get to see George much after I married. My memories of him as I grew up are some of my favorites. He always wanted to have fun. Cork, I loved you both and was always excited when the Johnson’s came for holidays. They were happier with all of you there.
He will be missed. I’m happy for him that he got to go as he wanted.

George was a class act, and I always enjoyed our wide-ranging, fun conversations. George had so much common sense and great insights into life!!! I am proud to have known this fine man and colleague for many, many years at Oswego Middle School, and even prouder to have called him my friend. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
Dear Joan and family: I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the entire family. As his boss for the 20 years he worked at the Middle School, I have so many fond memories of our time together. He always had a kind word for everyone, and a great sense of humor. It was my priviledge to have know such a fine man, not just as a colleauge, but as a dear friend as well.
