OSWEGO, NY – Dr. David D. O’Brien, 84, and formerly of Oswego, died Saturday morning November 2, 2013, in Westminster at Lake Ridge, Va.
Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late David D. and Emma Regan O’Brien.
He was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Oswego.
Dr. O’Brien was educated in Oswego schools and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Lemoyne College in 1951 and his Medical Degree from the SUNY College of Medicine in 1955.
He was a major in the US Air Force and served from 1957-1965.
David was a longtime private practice physician in Oswego until his retirement last year.
He served as the Medical Director at St. Luke Health Services, Inc., for many years and was also medical consultant to the Nuclear Industry in Oswego.
He was a member of the St. Luke Health Services, Inc., board of directors and the Hall Newman Foundation board of directors.
Dr. O’Brien was a ski chaperone for the Oswego High School Ski Club for 25 years and a teacher of Faith Formation at St. Paul’s Church for seven years.
He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Jackson of Lake Ridge, Va.; three daughters, Kathryn (Anthony) Caltabiano of Oswego, Meghan (Bruce) Donaldson of Summit, NJ, and Alice (Eric) Ross of Lee, Mass.; two sons, David O’Brien III of Lynn Haven, Fla., and Dr. Christopher (Liliana Aguilar) O’Brien of Houston, Texas; one stepdaughter, Dr. Cynthia (Patrick Taylor) Chapman of Alexandria, Va.; one stepson, Tyler (Heather) Chapman of Chester, Vermont; one sister, Margaret O’Brien of Oswego; an adopted son, Protus (Stephanie Gindele) Mayunga of Chichester, NY; 15 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Dr. O’Brien was predeceased by his first wife, Alice Mack O’Brien; one daughter, Diane (David) Barry; one son, Michael O’Brien; and two sisters, Ellen Martin and Carol McLean.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Oswego.
Another memorial mass will be held in Ottawa, Canada, at a later date.
There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements in Virginia are being handled by the Montcastle Funeral Home in Woodbridge.
Services in Oswego are being coordinated by the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
