OSWEGO, NY – Mary A. Kane a former resident of 62 Ontario St. Oswego and recently of Bishop’s Commons passed away Tuesday evening June 26, 2012, at St. Luke Health Services, Inc. at the age of 101.
She was born July 27, 1910, in Oswego and was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Margaret Griffin Kane.
She was a life resident of Oswego.
Miss Kane attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Oswego High School at the age of 16.
Following high school, she attended Buffalo State University and the Eastman Dental School in Rochester, NY, graduating in 1931 at the age of 20.
School was always easy for Mary and following graduation she accepted a job as a Dental Hygienist with the Oswego City School District where she worked until her retirement in 1971.
Mary was a daily communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
She was a member of the Legion of Mary and served as president at various times.
Throughout her life she was associated with the city of Oswego in different capacities as well as the Oswego Hospital and many other local organizations.
Miss Kane was a member of the New York State and the Oswego Teachers Associations and a life time member of the New York State Retired Dental Hygienist Association which honored her in 1998 for her service to that organization.
She is survived by a nephew, Richard (Suzanne) Masters of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and her nieces, Margaret (Jim) Updike of Riverview, Fla. and Phyllis Masters of Rochester, NY; 10 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; 19 reat-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews; and one great-great-great-niece.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Kane and Catherine Kane Masters; two nephews, Jack Kane Masters and James Masters; and one brother-in-law, Richard L. Masters.
Calling hours will be Monday July 2, from 5-7 p.m. at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
Private burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
A Memorial Mass will be held in St. Mary’s Church to celebrate Mary’s life on Aug. 25 at 10 a.m.

Mary Kane looked down my throat more than once in my school days and she was one of the finest women this city ever produced. Her passing is a loss for Oswego.
