David Cordone Sr.: Misrepresented and Disappointed

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter as a member of the Fulton Board of Education.  I was so disappointed by the article in a local printed publication that left out much of my comments made publicly at the Fulton Board of Education Meeting on September 15.  First, I believe that our superintendent (not the Board, because it’s not our responsibility) has done his best to create a “Re-entry Plan” for all of our students (Pre-k through grade 12), with his administrative team.  I do not agree with the decision to “Opt-out of Fall Sports.”  I stated that in the recorded Board Meeting of September 15. It is my position that the social and emotional health of our student athletes is not served well by this decision, and their voice was not considered before the decision was made.  These students have made healthy choices to devote their energy and commitment to participate in athletics, and this option has been taken away from them because there is potential fear for the transmission of the COVID Virus amongst athletes between school districts.
My main point was missed by the reporter for the local print-media source.  I believe this decision should have been left to the parents of our students.  None of us can forecast the future. We just need to follow the guidance of the professionals. As has been stated, the Governor has allowed for fall sports to occur, and I am so sad for the students of the Fulton CSD that they are being denied this opportunity.
Respectfully,
David Cordone Sr.

  1. Im not sure many dispute that sports are important to our youth. However, we need to be focused on getting our kids back to school, assuring that they will have a succesful first quarter. It is hard to say the year is going well when it has only been one week. Taking time, energy, and resources away from that main focus to come up with a plan for fall sports should not even be considered.

Also ironic that a community event happened over the weekend fundraising for one sport. Pictures show very little regard for safety, social distancing, etc. That was disappointing to say the least, you wanna play sports then you need to show responsibility. I am confident that many in the pictures were some the same athletes protesting. Just saying.

  2. In my opinion, our main focus should be limiting COVID-19. Some feel cheated. Personally, I don’t mind the limitations. I can’t travel now and my mask is an annoyance. But I’ll accept it. I feel we need to make sacrifices now to insure a healthy future. If that means stuff like flying, sports, close contact events are limited, then so be it. I’m confident that our futures will be healthier if we take sacrifice now.

  3. I hate to break it to you all BUT….the kids are already playing sports. Many are in club soccer playing against kids from all over CNY. Moving fall sports to spring wont change a thing as far as the ‘contact’ goes. Some of this was just silly…tennis? Really? Golf? Non contact but were moved.
