Fishing Reports for May 10, 2016

This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Lake Ontario report:
According to Capt. Kevin Davis of Catch the Drift:
Fishing remains pretty good with a wide variety of fish around. Lots of lakers with browns, kings steelhead and cohos mixed in. Some of the nicest looking spring fish I have seen in quite a while. Marking big bait pods with all sizes of alewives. I love fishing the day after a west blow which happened on Sunday. Huge numbers on Monday but the size was down. The two-year old class of browns looks good.

Oswego River report:
The water flow has steadily dropped over the last few days running at 5,290cfs this morning. Areas all along the river are accessible. When conditions settle down anglers may find a few steelhead and brown trout. Walleye season will open at midnight tonight. Look for bullhead at Wright’s Landing with worms and minnows the suggested baits.

The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are Mandatory Personal Flotation Device (PFD) zones on the Oswego River below the Varick Dam. Pulaski Area/Salmon River report:
According to Fat Nancy’s Tackle Shop:
The brown trout fishing on the lake has been good. Anglers are catching fish on Smithwick stickbaits and Michigan stinger UV pickle seed spoons.

Salmon River:
According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:
Sunday was a cooler, breezy day on the run. Fish brought to hand were rainbow trout, nice bright drop back steelhead, several brown trout, smallmouth bass and sightings of Atlantic salmon. Yesterday anglers reported hooking smallmouth bass and carp. A few steelhead were spotted with one nice one being caught.

According to Fat Nancy’s Tackle Shop:
The Salmon River water flow is 285cfs. The best fishing has been from the 81 Pool down to the Black Hole. The best baits have been blue egg sacs, white egg sacs, pink worms and spinners.

Oneida Lake report:
Saturday’s walleye opener was successful with a few perch mixed in the catches. Bluegills are active in the bays. Worms, minnows and bucktail jigs are working well. Anglers are finding smallmouth bass in 5-10 feet of water and black crappies are being taken along the shoreline along with a few bullheads.

Sandy Pond report:
Walleye season opened on Saturday. Anglers reported decent activity using stickbaits and jigs.
