Senior Day proved to be an emotional rollercoaster for the Fulton Raiders boys’ lacrosse team on Saturday, as the Jordan-Elbridge Eagles soared into town to steal a 15-14 game in the Raiders final home game of the season.
It was a tale of two halves for the Raiders, who strolled onto the field after honoring their seniors and quickly found themselves in a deficit to the Eagles. Fulton was down 8-4 at halftime after coming out of the gates flat, the opposite of what is expected in the final home game for 14 seniors and the rest of the team.
“It was frustrating at first for sure,” said senior defenseman Robbie Pollock. “We stuck together and used our emotions to motivate us.”
Fulton had another slow scoring quarter in the third quarter, only finding the back of the net on two of its shots, but it was the fourth quarter that took the complex by storm.
With about eight minutes left in the game, the Raiders found themselves down by seven goals. Fulton used an early fourth quarter goal to start propelling their comeback.
Facing that large of a deficit with that little of time can be extremely intimidating for a team, but when it is your final game in front of your home crowd, anything can happen.
The Raiders went on a run in the fourth quarter, as they scored an impressive eight goals in the final several minutes.
Senior defenseman Tyler Shaw ,who recorded five goals in the game, led the scoring barrage for the home team. But as the clock hit triple zeros, Fulton looked up and saw that time was not on its side.
“We left it all on the field and almost pulled it off, just needed a few more things to go our way,” said Pollock.
Fulton’s comeback had fallen short by one goal, 15-14. The Freedom American’s second place team also saw their record dip below .500 (7-8 overall) with the loss. The Raiders final game of the season will come on Wednesday as they will visit the East Syracuse-Minoa Spartans (6-9).
The seniors for Fulton being honored prior to the game were Jacob Bailey, Brandon Batstone, Austin Beckwith, Vinny Bennett, Zach Britton, Ben Hughes, Jake McDermott, Robbie Pollock, Vic Runeare, Tyler Shaw, David Tallents, Spencer Vono, Kyle Ware and Austin Wilde.
