OSWEGO, NY – The league championship came to the Lady Bucs softball team on Thursday night while the Lady Bucs lacrosse and golf teams played well, but came up short.
Eliza Parker also paced the OHS track team. Meanwhile, jayvee action was quite successful.
Lady Buc Softball Champs
Somewhere on Route 34, between Auburn and Oswego, after defeating Auburn 5-2 on Thursday night, the OHS softball team became CNYCL American champions.
On the bus ride home, the Lady Bucs received word that first place West Genesee had been defeated by Central Square 1-0, moving Oswego into first place on the final day of the season for its first league championship since 2007.
On Senior Night for the Maroons, they jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead on four consecutive hits off Oswego ace Laura Miceli.
She settled down, backed by an errorless Oswego defense, to retire 18 of the final 20 hitters over the next six innings for the victory.
Offensively, the Lady Bucs got one back in the second when Erika Lazzaro reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a single by Marissa Canale.
Oswego took the lead for the first time with a 3-run, sixth inning rally. Canale delivered a double through the drawn-in infield, plating Lazzaro and Emily Kolenda. Pinch runner Kaitlin Friel came around to score on an RBI single by Taylor Maas.
A two-out, seventh inning single by Lazzaro plated Devynn Wilder with the Bucs’ fifth and final run.
Coach Mike McCrobie stated that when the Lady Bucs left the field Thursday night they were focused on the upcoming sectional seeding and Friday’s non-league season finale against West Genesee – not a league title.
“It really hadn’t occurred to us that we could still win the league because we had been in second place behind West Genny the entire season,†he said. “We received the text message saying that Square had beaten West Genesee and the look on the kids’ faces was priceless. It was a nice ride home,†he said.
The win moves Oswego to 10-2 in the league and 14-4 overall. With the seeding meeting on Sunday, the Lady Bucs could be the number two seed behind Liverpool, with the tournament commencing next week.
That seed is likely to give them a first-round bye and a quarterfinal home game around Memorial Day weekend.
Parker Solid In Girls’ Track
Led by the outstanding performance of senior Eliza Parker, the Oswego girl’s track team turned in a strong performance recently, at the CNYCL Track and Field Championships.
The meet was held at the Cicero North Syracuse Athletic Complex.
Parker, one of the top hurdlers in the section, was a double winner for the Lady Bucs, winning the 100 meter hurdles in a fast time of 15.72 and won the 400 meter hurdle title, in a personal best time of 1:06.69. She also ran a leg on Oswego’s second place 400 meter relay (52.99), along with Cydney Ward, Alexis Files, and Whitney Ford. Her 1600 meter relay of Ward, Files, and Ford, ran a season best time of 4:39.4, to place 6th among the leagues elite.
Sophomore sprint standout Whitney Ford, ran a fine time of 13.56 in the 100 meter dash, to finish second, and placed fourth in the 200 meter dash with a strong time of 28.38.
Senior Alexis Files ran a season best time of 1:10.28, to finish third in the 400 meter hurdles for Oswego.
With all four relay members turning in personal best efforts, the Lady Bucs placed sixth in the 3200 meter relay, with a season best time of 12:17.4. Members of the relay included Courtney Gazada, Paige Gray, Michelle Champagne, and Catherine Wells.
Senior Bridgette Auyer closed out her fine career, with a season best time of 2:44.9 in the 800 meter run, to finish sixth.
Freshmen Leah Weiss earned a personal best in the 800 meter run for the Lady Bucs. Other strong efforts were turned in by Kaela Shafer in the 800 meter run and Aryelle Caruso in the discus.
On Thursday, Oswego will return to Cicero North Syracuse, site of next year’s New York State Track and Field Championships, for the Section III Class AA Championships, starting at 4:30 p.m.
Lady Buc Golfers Improve
The Oswego Buccaneers lost a closely contested clash on Thursday to West Genesee by a final stroke count of 198-191 at Westvale Golf Club in Camillus.
Oswego’s 2010 season is winding down, with only two more matches (both home) remaining before the sectional tournament convenes next Thursday.
The season has been a tough one as far a wins and losses, but the overall improvement of each individual player has been a thrill to witness.
Many of this year’s players started as total beginners, never having played 9 holes (some had barely swung a club before).
Most had never kept their own score and many knew nothing of golf’s strict structure of rules and etiquette.
Now, the girls understand the rules and seem to carry themselves with more confidence and poise on the course. It’s this confidence and poise that will hopefully carry over to school and life.
“That’s the thing about golf,†said Coach Dan Rose. “You can learn something about yourself and the world every time out. It’s quite a treat to see this realization in my players year after year.â€
Rose went on, “It’s definitely fun to win, don’t get me wrong. But, it’s even more fun to play a sport that makes you stronger physically and mentally, challenges you to be the best competitor and person that you can be. Golf’s quite rewarding that way.â€
And so the season rolls on for the Bucs two more matches remain. Both matches will be contested at Oswego Country Club. The girls look to add to their 2 wins and finish the year strongly.
At The Greens at Beaumont in North Syracuse, the Oswego Girls’ Golf Team lost two matches on Wednesday to a tough CNS team and a powerful Auburn squad.
Oswego tallied a final score of 212 strokes on the tricky par 36 front nine – only 13 strokes behind the home team C-NS, and just 24 strokes behind visiting Auburn.
The losses brought the team’s record to 2-11 overall, 1-5 in league play.
Rachel Baxter continued her fine play for the Bucs, recording her 11th team medalist honor in 13 tries this season. Baxter, who will be attending George Washington University in the fall, was a bit disappointed in her score on this day, but she is more disappointed that her college of choice does not carry a female golf team. Rachel has vowed to work hard her first semester to change that.
Also working hard on this day was fellow Buc golfer Tess Gordon who completed her best round of the year which included a stunning chip in birdie 4 on her final hole.
Tess’s reaction was at first one of shock, but she was soon overcome by excitement and joy.
“I stood there with my mouth open and then just jumped up and down with my pitching wedge held high,†Tess recalled after the match on the bus.
Sarah Gosek also continued her steady play.
Regular Season Winds Down
The Oswego High School girls’ varsity lacrosse team had a 2-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the game, but in the end visiting Watertown won the non-league game 16-15 in overtime.
In the first half Oswego built up a comfortable lead, but the visitors kept clawing back and eventually took home a win.
Samantha McCarrick had an eight point game with six goals and two assists while Amanda D’Amico scored three and added an assist. It was a two goal outing for Kaitlin Armstrong and also scoring were Maia Czarnecki, Mikayla Place, Leah Folgherait and Mckenzie Robinson while Tayler Giglio had two assists.
Taylor Bowman had 17 saves for the 10-6 Lady Bucs who also finished the season with a 6-4 league mark.
Jayvee Softball Victory
The girls’ jayvee softball bats were hot on a warm day in Auburn. The Lady Bucs won their second game of the week 14-4 at Auburn.
Chrissy Abare tripled, doubled, and singled twice. Isabella Winklestine homered and singled.
Sara Mancuso, Mary Montagnola, and Caitlyn McRae singled three times, Margeurite Dillon singled twice. Lindsey Ramsey and Ashlee Wapen singled.
Wapen pitched a complete game for the win in the circle.
Lady JV Laxers Win
The Oswego jayvee girls’ lacrosse team closed out its season with a dominating 16-2 win over visiting Watertown.
Oswego jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the first four minutes and never looked back.
The Bucs, who showed improvement with each game, put together their best overall effort of the season. The balanced offense was a textbook example of teamwork and efficiency.
Of the 16 total goals scored, 14 were the result of an assist from a team mate.
Once again leading the Buc attack was Alexa Healy with 4 goals and 4 assists. Kelly Chetney added 3 goals and 1 assist, Kelsey Ross had 2 goals, Abby Haessig and Courtney Hallock each had 1 goal and 2 assists, Sarah Stoebner, Hannah Fitzgerald, Libby Sherman and Allison McPherson each had 1 goal and 1 assist, Christie Hoefer had 1 goal, and Mary Cate Rice added 1 assist. Also contributing to the offense today and throughout the season were Catie Geroux, Bethany Rookey, Sarah Stoebner and Allie White.
The stingy Oswego defense was again led by goalie Kerrigan Cummins, with 5 saves.
Other defensive standouts today and over the course of the season were Brianna Favata, Andrea Folgerhait, Danielle Faivus, Paige Hart, Alyssa Suits and Cassie Collins.
Although the team started the season slowly, losing the first six games, the steady improvement, never give up attitude and unselfish team play, allowed it to win five of the last nine games to finish with 5-10.
