OHS Sports Roundup

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego teams have been in action throughout the week.

Calling the game against West Genesee “undoubtedly our best effort of the season” Oswego High School boys’ varsity lacrosse coach wasn’t upset with the 14-7 loss to the traditional lax power.

Coach Doc Nelson said, “Defensively we played well for the most part. We cleared the ball well and West Genny never really went on one of their patented runs. Every quarter was close.”

He felt that Jared Cooper had a great game at close defense and Trent Yule had an outstanding save late in the game.

Nelson said, “Matt Howard had 11 faceoffs which is unheard of against the Wildcats and we also took care of the ball most of the time.”

He felt that the loss of some ground balls and fatigue late in the game played a critical role in the final outcome.

He also noted, “I think a major difference was our lack of depth.”

West Genesee jumped to a 5-2 lead after one and at the intermission it was 8-6.

Oswego could only muster one goal in the second half.

Matt Donovan paced the team with four goals while Dom Cianfarano had two goals and Matt Howard one. Howard added two assists while Alex Bush, Pat Holland and Donovan had one each.

Earlier this week, the Bucs lost 12-8 to Central Square as turnovers hampered their efforts.

Coach Nelson said, “Dom Cianfarano had a nice game with five goals and an assist and Matt Donovan added five assists while Brandon Galloway won 60% of his faceoffs.”

It was a 4-4 game after one period, but the Red Hawks went up 8-4 by halftime.

Also scoring for Oswego were Rick Uribe, Wes Ihlow and Bush with a goal apiece and Holland, and Bush added assists while in the net Yule had 18 saves.

Gosek Paces Golfers to Win

Junior golfer Sarah Gosek has been searching for a spark this season, something to bring her golf game to the next level.

It seems that Sarah found that spark on Monday during a match with visiting Central Square.

On the front nine at Oswego Country Club, using a new driver given to her by her grandfather only nights before, Gosek shattered her career best score by 10 strokes while capturing medalist honors in the home match with a final 9-hole score of 44.

The total included 2 pars.

“I want to go home and give my grandpa a big kiss on the forehead,” Sarah remarked after the match.

Although the driver did help Sarah during the round, it is her short game that has shown a marked improvement in this, her second year as a varsity golfer.

“She continues to work hard on her game around the green, as do all the girls on the team,” said Coach Rose. “When a player feels confident on and around the greens, there is no telling how low their score will go.”

Gosek was not the only member of the Oswego team carding records on this sunny Monday afternoon.

Rachel Baxter (53), Tess Gordon (56) and Courtney Kelly (57) also contributed their lowest nine-hole scores of the season.

The team home total of 210 was also a season low.

Oswego won the match by 22 strokes over Central Square.

The team battled cold, windy conditions in a hard-fought loss at home to an undefeated Fayetteville Manlius team.

Oswego’s total stroke count of 228 was not low enough to challenge league leading F-M, but was a respectable score considering the environment in which the match was played.

A cold wind howled on many of Oswego Country Club’s front nine holes, making already difficult shots even more challenging for the golfers.

Even putting was tricky at times as the wind coaxed many balls off path and off line.

Oswego golfer Rachel Baxter weathered the weather quite well.

Half-way through her senior season, Rachel has set the personal goal of making it to sectional qualifying (being held at Rogue’s Roost on May 27).

To do that, a player must attain a “target score” that meets sectional standards twice during the season.

In difficult conditions, Baxter met that target score, shooting a respectable 50 on the front nine at Oswego Country Club.

Baxter’s round included a beautiful par on hole number 2, a difficult par 3 into the wind.

“After a round, when I look at a player’s scorecard, I mean, sure, I want to see pars and birdies,” said Coach Rose after the match as he analyzed the players’ cards at a round table in the clubhouse, safely out of the wind and cold.

“But there is more to golf than pars and birdies,” he continued, “I really like to check out what a player does after they have had a bad hole. How do they handle themselves when they are not playing well? Will they fight till the end of the round or give up and quit? I want golfers who will fight it out till the end of the round. Judging from what I’m seeing on these scorecards, I think I have a group of girls willing to fight this year.”

Oswego may not have won the match on Thursday, but it seems the players are earning a lot of respect from their coach.

The team’s schedule does not get any easier as they again play F-M, this time on the road next Wednesday.

The team’s record is now 2-6 overall.

Softball Blanks FM Hornets

The Oswego High School Lady Buccaneer softball team defeated Fayetteville-Manlius 4-0 here on Tuesday in a CNYCL contest.

Oswego got on the only run it would need in the visitors’ fourth inning.

Devynn Wilder doubled to the left field fence with two outs, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sharp RBI single off the second baseman’s glove by Marissa Canale.

The Lady Bucs tacked on two key insurance runs in the sixth. Michele Canale led off with a double. She stole third and scored on Devynn Wilder’s single. Wilder came around with the third run on a pair of passed balls and a fielder’s choice.

Oswego manufactured its final run with fundamental, small ball offense according to Coach Mike McCrobie.

A single by Allie Yule, a stolen base, followed by Taylor Maas’ sacrifice bunt and a fielder’s choice, made it 4-0 Bucs.

“For the second game in a row, we faced one of the best pitchers in Section III (FM’s Amy Bright). She limited us to just 5 hits and had double-digit strikeouts. But, the kids’ battle at the plate and made the most out the opportunities we had. This is a real quality win,” McCrobie stated.

Laura Miceli out-dueled the FM ace by throwing a four-hit shutout and being supported by outstanding defense.

“FM only had one runner reach third base, but they did have several other scoring opportunities. Laura made some key pitches and the defense made the plays to preserve the shutout,” stated McCrobie.

The win moves the Lady Bucs to a record of 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the CNYCL.

Wild Lady Buc Lacrosse Game

In a classic lacrosse game the state ranked Fayetteville-Manlius Hornets eked out a 23-20 win over the Lady Bucs.

Coach Laura Burger said, “We played a tough team from FM ranked 10th in the state and second in our league. The game was a lot of back and forth between us and host FM. The Hornets were able to control more draws than we were able to, and that was the big difference in the game for us.  We needed to get more possession off of the draws today and we did not.”

Amanda D’Amico had four goals and two assists while Leah Folgherait had three goals and an assist, Samantha McCarrick three goals and Mikayla Place three goals and an assist.

Taylor Cianfarano added two goals as did Tayler Giglio (also two assists) while also scoring were Kaitlin Armstrong and Maia Czarnecki. Nikki Paulhardt had two assists.

Steve LiVoti also had a third-place finish with a throw of 100’ in the discus.
