OSWEGO — The Oz Roller Girls will bring Oswego’s newest sport to one of the city’s most historic buildings when they host Kingston Derby Girls’ Skateful Dead squad in the Oswego YMCA Armory on March 10.
For the bout, titled “Blizzard of Oz,” doors will open at 5 p.m. with starting whistle at 6 p.m. as the local team hosts its first international competition.
Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in large part due to its striking architecture, the armory was built between 1906 and 1908. Originally constructed for munitions and training, the building has hosted many types of athletic activities over the decades — but March 10 will mark the first roller derby appearance.
Oz comes into the bout with an eight-game winning streak, including a season-opening win against the Albany All-Stars A team after a successful 10-2 record in their 2011 debut season.
Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 4 to 12.
Due to limited seating at the Armory, visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs if possible.
A portion of proceeds from the bout will benefit Move Along Inc., which provides recreational opportunities for disabled individuals.
