John F. Kennedy’s “We choose to go to the moon” speech spoken at Rice University flooded the speakers placed behind Volney Elementary school as more than 50 sixth graders prepared to launch their homemade rockets.

Fort Ontario Exhibit Honors Pioneer American Photographer
A temporary exhibit on the life and photographic images of pioneer American photographer George N. Barnard has been installed at Fort Ontario State Historic Site, 1 E. Fourth St. The Onondaga Historical Association has loaned the exhibit which will be displayed in Officers’ Quarters One until Columbus Day when the fort closes for the season. Regular fort admission prices will be charged and include entry to the exhibit.

Steelhead Expert Discusses Fishing Strategy Sept. 26 at Altmar Hatchery
The Lake Ontario Tributary Anglers Council will sponsor a fishing seminar on Friday at the Salmon River Hatchery. This seminar is being held as part of the National Hunting and Fishing Day celebration. There will be a social hour at 6 p.m. with the presentation to begin at 7 p.m.
