CiTi construction technology students are helping to build ramps for the ARISE Oswego County Ramp Program. The ramps will be built individually in sections and then assembled later on the site of qualified applicant homes belonging to persons with disabilities.
Seventeen Pulaski High School students received honors from the Scholastic Art Competition of Central New York. “I am thrilled to have seventeen artworks selected from Pulaski in this year’s award show,” said art teacher Karen Backus. “This is an unprecedented number of talented students.”
The newest residents of the town of Mexico received quite the introduction to the community during a ceremony held Saturday at Mexico Middle School. United States Army SFC Jeffery Hackett and his family were greeted by dozens family members, friends, local politicians and soon-to-be neighbors who thanked Hackett for his military service, which has left the veteran permanently injured.
Music, dancing, lights, and squeals of delight filled the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School gymnasium as the APW Parent/Teacher/Student Association sponsored Glow-in-the-dark Dance lit up the night on Jan. 23.
Last week, the Governor presented his State of the State address. This annual tradition, much like the President’s State of Union address, is an opportunity for the Governor to set forth his priorities for the upcoming state legislative session. The State of the State address is usually in the beginning of January but this year it was appropriately delayed due to the passing of the Governor’s father. If you didn’t hear much about the State of the State, it is because the day after the State of the State address long-term State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was arrested for public corruption.
On January 29, the students within the Fulton City School District in grades UPK – 12 will have an early dismissal. Grades 7 – 12 will dismiss at 10:30 a.m. and morning Pre K – 6 will dismiss at 11:15 a.m.
Pulitzer-Prize winning author Douglas Blackmon, author of the best-selling book “Slavery by Another Name,” will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 12, in the Marano Campus Center auditorium at SUNY Oswego. A featured presentation during the college’s celebration of Black History Month, the event is free and open to the public.
Residents can learn how to better manage their chronic condition during a free, six-week program that is being taught by experienced health educators. Oswego Health and the Oswego County Department of Health are once again offering the free workshops developed by Stanford University. The classes will be held four times during the year at convenient locations throughout the county.
In the midst of another long cold winter OCO Nutrition Services is ensuring that those in its home delivered meal program have an emergency supply of food on hand in the event that they are unable to receive their regular meal due to inclement weather conditions. With the help of area businesses, community members and student volunteers OCO has been collecting food for, preparing and delivering blizzard bags throughout Oswego County since November.
Novelis, the global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, today (Jan. 26) announced the completion of a $48 million investment in its automotive scrap aluminum recycling facility in Scriba. It expands upon the company’s recent growth in Oswego to meet the increased demand for aluminum automotive sheet in North America. Including this recycling center, over the past five years, Novelis has invested more than $400 million in Oswego and hired more than 430 new employees, with around 250 additional jobs planned by the year 2020.
