State’s Crime Rate Drops in 2016; DNA Databank Helps Solve More than 20,000 Crimes

New Yorkers consistently rank public safety high on the list of importance so it is good news that in 2016, the number of crimes in the state reached an all-time low. In addition, the crime rate in New York has steadily declined since 1990 with few exceptions. According to the latest data compiled by the state’s Division of Criminal Justice Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York was the sixth most violent state in 1994, but today it is the safest large state in the nation.

2018 Oswego County Budget Holds the Line on Property Taxes

For the third consecutive year, Oswego County legislators kept the tax rate steady at $7.70 per $1,000 assessed property value with the adoption of the 2018 county budget Thursday night, Dec. 14. The 2018 budget contains $203,004,863 in appropriations, with $43.8 million raised through the property tax levy.

Oswego District Plans Large Capital Project, March Vote Set

Members of the Oswego School Board got a glimpse Tuesday night of a proposed multi-million capital project aimed at refurbishing the district’s aging schools. The projected cost of the plan is $60,180,000. Local funds to be applied total $4,000,000. State building aid is expected to pay for 63.4 percent of the work. A public vote is tentatively set for March 6.
