When Nebraska became a state in 1867, Lincoln became the capital of Nebraska instead of Omaha, the territorial capital. Today the city is a destination with art, nature, history, and a myriad of things to enjoy.
John and I enjoy visiting places that – to us – seem off the beaten path. The Fox Cities make up the third largest metropolitan area of Wisconsin. The small towns in the Fox Cities area have traditional main streets with a plethora of things to enjoy. Think of it as “life in a slow lane.”
Cooperstown is famed as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. The attractive village has many attractions including the Glimmerglass Opera, the Farmers’ Museum, and the Fenimore Art Museum. What caught me by surprise was the Cooperstown Dreams Park. The baseball team our grandson plays on in Las Vegas was invited to play at the Dreams Park; of course, my husband and I had to go to watch.
The production features a huge cast of area youth including Doug Schneider in the role of Shrek, Leah Mullen as Fiona, Catrina Edwards as Donkey, Ryan Smith as Lord Farquad, and Caroline Gray as the Dragon.
The Oswego Players proudly present Cathleen O’Brien Brown in the coveted role of “Mama Rose” in its summer production of the great American musical “Gypsy.” Brown will be accompanied by a six-piece band and an all-star local cast from all over Upstate NY for this Sondheim spectacular!
The Great Wall of China is not a continuous wall, but a number of sections built over a long period of time. If all the sections are included in the length it would span about 13,600 miles. There are conflicting reports on whether or not the wall was seen from the Moon with most people saying it was not. The wall, while massive, is a long thin line. We visited the Great Wall on our first trip in the 1990s. On our recent visit to Beijing John and I decided to visit a different section of the wall.
Gypsy is a musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents, which focuses on Gypsy’s mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with “the ultimate show business mother.” It follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life.
New York State is fortunate to have so many unique places to visit. One of those places is Howe Caverns which I found just as impressive on my third visit as I did on my first two visits decades ago. Howe Caverns took six million years to create and it is not finished yet, but the change is slow. Even if the changes in the caverns are not discernible other changes are. There is now a rock wall, zip lines, and even a bungee-style activity for those looking for thrills.
The production, which looks at the foibles of love and live on stage, features two one-act comedies: “Take Five” a comedy by Westley M. Pederson, directed by Donald Crowe and “Who Am I This Time?” by Christopher Sergel, based on the short story by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., directed by Valeri Roscoe Dedich.
John and I have been to several chocolate museums but nothing compared with our visit to the Chocolate Museum in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and the first European city in the Americas. The Choco Museum is just steps from Plaza Colon in the heart of the colonial center of the city. The tour started in a small garden of cocoa plants and then followed the production process. We learned that the cocoa plant is “finicky.”
