Looking to prepare students for the next chapter of their lives, Kimberly Sparkman is excited to join the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation as the new Dean of Students for Career and Technical Education. Originally from upstate New York, Sparkman said she is excited to return to the area after several years of teaching downstate.
The district’s new Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning has 20 years of experience in education, as she began her career as a special education teacher before a natural progression to administrative roles. She arrived at MACS two months ago, having come from Chenango Valley Central Schools where she served as the assistant superintendent of schools and director of personnel.
High school guidance staff and administrators welcomed students and their parents to the building and offered some tips to help the freshmen embark on a successful high school career.

United Way of Greater Oswego County officially begins its 2018 Annual Campaign with a kickoff breakfast on September 13 at the American Foundry in Oswego. The event will introduce the theme to this year’s United Way Campaign; “Together We Stand United.”
The free event, in the Marano Campus Center auditorium (Room 132), will feature three SUNY Oswego faculty members — Bonita Hampton of curriculum and instruction, Brian Moritz of communication studies and Kenneth Marshall of history — with sports journalist Brent Axe from Syracuse.com and ESPN Radio Syracuse.
With a western theme, The Manor of Seneca Hill hosted its annual resident family picnic on a weather-perfect August night. Attending the picnic were many family members who have a loved one who resides at The Manor, a 120 skilled nursing facility.
A free concert featuring Shafaat Khan, classical musician of India, originally scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, at SUNY Oswego, has been canceled. The performance formerly was to be an unofficial kickoff on campus for the “Year of India,” sponsored by the college’s Institute for Global Engagement.
Colgate University political science professor and scholar Dr. Nina M. Moore, whose research focuses on racial inequality, public policy and governance processes, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in Marano Campus Center auditorium as part of SUNY Oswego’s I Am Oz Diversity Speakers Series. Author of “The Political Roots of Racial Tracking in American Criminal Justice,” Moore will appear as the first 2017-18 speaker for I Am Oz.
The Children’s Room at the Oswego Public library offers free storyhours with a craft, and snack for children. Storyhours take place on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Topics vary each day.
