Rotarians Hear About Fight Against Cancer

October 31, 2011 Submitted article

Fulton Rotarian, Gary McIlvain, left, introduced Carolyn Handville, Coordinator of Cancer Aware-ness at OCO Health in Oswego County at a recent Fulton Noon Rotary meeting. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we all see the athletes on TV wearing Pink to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. Carolyn informed the Rotarians of activities that happen on the front lines in our local fight against cancer. Carolyn told the Rotarians that she works with OCO Health Service and she gets help with her funding from NYS Department of Health and the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Cen-tral NY Affiliates. Carolyn said that the number one thing we can do to help in the fight against can-cer is early detection. Because early detection is the key to surviving cancer. OCO offers FREE Cancer Screening to women 40 years of age or older or have a family history of breast cancer, and have limited or are without health insurance. They also offer FREE Cancer Screenings for men who are 50 years of age or older and uninsured. Carolyn has a list of Partnering Providers of the Cancer Services Program Partnership of Oswego County. These various facilities have and agreement with CSPP of Oswego County to provide services to under or uninsured individuals at an agreed upon rate. Education being a large part of Carolyn’s duties she has taken the fight to the streets. Carolyn is organizing the 2nd Annual Human Pink Ribbon in Oswego County. It will be held at the Wal-Mart parking lot in Central Square. Anyone that is available get your “Pink On” and support cancer awareness.
