Police announced in a news release that they arrested William L. Calkins, Sr., 42, of Fulton and Lorie A. Calkins, 39, of Rochester on felony charges of grand larceny and falsifying business records.
It’s a safe bet that school superintendents did not hear what they wanted to hear when they met Thursday with State Senator Darrel Aubertine about state aid for next school year. Hannibal Superintendent of Schools Mike DiFabio summed up Aubertine’s message: “Chances of an on-time state budget are slim and the Governor’s numbers (on state aid to districts) are about the best we’re going to get.” Oswego’s superintendent, Bill Crist added the senator told everyone what they already know – “the state of the state is not good and we all will need to make some difficult decisions in the next year(s).”
Under pressure from the state Education Department, school districts have changed their nicknames and logos if those names and logos could be seen as demeaning to Native Americans. Central Square, for example, changes its nickname from the Redmen to the Red Hawks.
State Police say the accident happened shortly before 10:00 a.m. on Route 11, just north of the Barker Rd. intersection.
