Fulton’s varsity football team will play the entire 2009 season on the road.
The original plan — to play its games at home during the second half of the season, once the new turf field is installed — died officially a few days ago, when more asbestos was found in drainage pipes beneath the field last Friday.
Abby Weaver sends us this photo of marathoners training. She writes: “Training for the Century Marathon, October 11 in Fulton, is a team effort. Local runners Beth Foederer and Sam Familo lead the training runs each Sunday around Fulton. The training schedule includes running 12 miles August 23, 15 miles August 30 and 20 miles the following weekend. The runs are held rain or shine, and often cover part of the marathon course. “Due to the current construction at G. Ray Bodley High School, the location for Thursday’s Senior Picture retakes for the 2010 Fultonian Yearbook has changed. Students are asked to enter through the temporary main entrance in the teacher’s parking lot and pictures will take place in room 132 rather than the auditorium. Room 132 is right around the corner from the entrance, which will make it easier for everyone involved.
The photographers will be at GRB from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thurs. Aug. 27. There is no charge for students who did not have their portrait taken in June, but there is a $10 retake fee which will be collected at the time of the pictures.”
“We’re very excited to celebrate” the news, said Betsy Conners, Executive Director for Instruction and Assessment, who got the news from the state in advance of an expected public announcement today.
It started with a carrot cake.
“It’s such a good recipe,” said Kathy Hotaling of Fulton. “Everyone had it and said, ‘you should open a bakery’.”
So she did.
A quick note: Fulton’s Public Library will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Painters will be at work inside the library. Drop your due books into the book drop and there’ll be no fines charged. The library will reopen Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Fulton Police say they tried to pull over John D. Halstead, Jr., 41, of 1065 St. Rt. 48, at about 2:03 a.m. Sunday after watching his speeding car hit a curb on W. 1st St. (Route 48) near Curtis St.
Police allege Halstead did not pull over. Instead, he hit the gas, hitting speeds of up to 80 miles an hour as he left the city on Rt. 48.

The jobless rate fell from 10.2% in June to 9.5% in July.
The rate remains very high — the third highest in the state outside of New York City.
High school principal Brian Schmitt said the high school hit state benchmarks in the English language arts test and improved overall.
