Fulton School Budget Ends Year With Unexpected Surplus

The Fulton City School District ended the 2008-2009 school year a half million dollars in the black thanks largely to a one-time windfall.

“Our goal every year is to stay under budget and we did,” said Superintendent Bill Lynch.

It’s the second year in a row that the district has spent less than it budgeted and the seventh in the last eight years that it spent less than it took in in revenues.

Hannibal Band, Silenced By Budget Cuts, Marches Anyway

Hannibal high school marching band members and parents protest the elimination of funds for the band behind a banner that says Hannibal "Silent" Marching Band.  They're trying to raise the money needed to bring the band back to life.

Hannibal’s high school marching band has always led the fire department’s annual field days parade. Thursday night, the job fell to the Central New York Fire and Police Band. But the band, eliminated by budget cuts,  marched anyway.  They came to make a point.

Do This Tonight: Hannibal Field Days Parade

The Island Band

The Island Band (seen here at Fulton’s Memorial Day Salute parade earlier this year) will be among the bands making music at tonight’s annual parade through the streets of Hannibal.

The Hannibal Fire Department’s annual field days open with the big parade, then oldies from Ruby Shooz at the field days site.

Friday night’s featured band is the big local rock band Under The Gun.  Saturday, the annual classic country show brings the Grammy award-winning band, The Kentucky Headhunters, to Hannibal.

Construction Workers Find Surprises Under The Sidewalk At Lanigan Elementary

You wouldn’t believe what they found under the sidewalk at Lanigan Elementary School. Workers tore up the sidewalk as part of the renovation work being done over the next two years in every district building.  The ground below the sidewalk wasn’t solid enough to suit the builders, so they dug deeper.
