Mayor Barlow Announces Partnership with WBUC; City Government Meetings to Air on TV

Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow today (Sept. 28) announced a new partnership with the Oswego City School District and the Oswego High School television station WBUC. Mayor Barlow has partnered with WBUC to begin broadcasting the city of Oswego committee and Common Council meetings on television for Oswego residents to view from their homes.

3-Part Legislation Promotes Craft Beverage Industry

Sen. George Amedore Jr. and Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy’s trail of legislation is intended to cultivate the promotion of New York State craft beverages. The most recent addition to this string of similar legislation that began three years ago, was a bill that would allow New York State distilleries to sell New York State made beer, wine and cider by the glass. The bill (S.2481/A.2994) was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on July 25.

Bishop’s Commons Resident Spearheads Fund Drive to Benefit Hurricane Victims

Bishop’s Commons resident Florence Filby decided it was time to take action after seeing an image on television of a mother wading through knee-deep waters clutching her two small children, after a devastating hurricane flooded her neighborhood. For the 103-year-old Filby, that scene and many others streaming to us from the storm-ravaged areas of the Caribbean, Texas and Florida over the course of the last few weeks made her want to help.

Legislator Dan Farfaglia Lends Support to OCO SAF Program

“SAF provides a valuable service to Oswego County residents,” said Farfaglia. “I believe that they need more resources to do their jobs. Since only a tiny fraction of the victims come forward, there is still a lot more work that needs to be done so that women, children and our senior citizens are no longer living in dangerous environments. Last year’s budget provided an increase in salaries for legislators. Since I feel what I was receiving was more than adequate I chose to donate that extra $370 to a worthwhile program in our community.”

SUNY Oswego, Suicide Prevention Organization To Host Awareness Event

On Saturday, Sept. 30, Suicide Awareness Voices of Education and the SUNY Oswego Lifestyles Center will hold their seventh annual Stride to SAVE Lives walk. The event is held every year to raise awareness about suicide. During the event, there will be a 5k walk or run starting at 11 a.m. as well as raffles, stories from survivors, musical performances and food.

Oswego Council OKs One Local Law, Sets Hearing For Another

At its meeting Monday night, the Common Council, councilors approved Local Law No. 5 of the Year 2017 – A local law adding Section C13-11 to the Charter of the City of Oswego With respect to the Department of Water. It gives the property owner a manner in which they can challenge their water or sewer bill. Also, a public hearing was set on a proposed local law that reduces the time allowed for redemption of residential and farm property that’s been foreclosed.

Motorist Hospitalized With ‘Life-Threatening’ Injuries, No Students Injured In Car-Bus Crash

On Monday State Police responded to the intersection of Barker Road and Shanty Creek Road for a report of a collision involving a Central Square school bus and a Subaru Impreza. The driver of the Subaru was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Upstate University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Body of Missing Fisherman Reportedly Recovered

A body was recovered this afternoon (Sept. 25) in Lake Ontario. It is believed to be that of a Pennsylvania fisherman who went missing on Lake Ontario, according to the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office. The body of 56-year-old Mark Deiter was found in about 100 feet of water. He was reportedly still in his boat that had sunk.
