Concern over smelly brown drinking water flowing from the taps of village homes and businesses has the community at odds but Phoenix leaders have finally charted a clear direction to address contamination at its wells, and perhaps finally cure the water’s dirty cast.
During its Oct. 21 meeting, Village Trustees decided to move forward with a plan to contract with the Metropolitan Water Board – the administrative arm of the Onondaga County Water District – for a clean drinking water supply for village of Phoenix residents and businesses.
Also in February budget discussions got under way in several places. And, Novelis workers vote on whether to unionize.
The Oswego Common Council got reorganized on Jan. 2. Councilors voted to reappoint Ronald Kaplewicz as the presiding officer of the council for 2014. He was approved 6-1. Councilor Shawn Walker noted no. The councilors also approved appointed Eric VanBuren as vice president. That vote was also 6-1 with Walker casting the nay vote. He didn’t vote against the person, just the raises each position carries, he explained.
Anthony F. Susino, 48, of 276 Lakeshore Road, Oswego, was arrested following a physical domestic incident involving family members. During this altercation, he allegedly attacked his children when they attempted to intervene and pointed a shotgun at a family member.
It looks like Santa Claus better have wheels on his sleigh tonight. According to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service, “Each year we have about a 66.6 percent chance of a white Christmas. This year, it looks like the other 33.3 percent will win out.”
Toys under today’s Christmas tree have more computer power than the Pentagon just a few years ago. Youngsters are asking Santa for robot dogs, video games and computers. Even a simple wristwatch is loaded with hi-tech wizardry these days. A sampling of newspaper ads from years gone by provides a glimpse into a different shopping for the holidays approach.
On December 20, the Fulton Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint along with members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Park Police, New York State Police and SUNY Oswego Campus Police. Immediately following the checkpoint officers conducted active roving DWI patrols. Numerous defendants were arrested and/or were issued traffic tickets during the checkpoint and patrols.
Eight new audible pedestrian signals have been installed in Fulton to increase pedestrian safety for people with visual impairments. The signals are at the intersection of Route 3/Route 48 and at the corner of Route 481 and Oneida Street. Audible pedestrian signals are specialized crossing devices that provide visual, tactile, and audio cues.
