Community Members Pitch in For Earth Week Tasks

Some AmeriCorps workers rake up dead leaves at the Human Concerns Center.

Several groups and individuals rolled up their sleeves over the weekend to help clean up the area. In Oswego, several members of AmeriCorps volunteered to clean up the grounds around the Human Concerns Center on East Fourth Street. The Oswego Kiwanis Club reportedly did a cleanup along Route 48 in Minetto, north of the village. Several others have or are planning cleanups for Oswego County’s Earth Week, April 19 – 28.

Oswego County Humane Society seeks help renaming event where mutts strut with humans for fun

For several years, OCHS has held its annual “Strut Your Mutt” dog walk/run event on the same weekend as the Barn Cat Boogie. However, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a very large Utah based organization with a national following, has held a trademark on the phrase “Strut Your Mutt” since 2002 and ordered OCHS to stop using it.

Hannibal School Board Unanimously Adopts Budget

During Wednesday’s Hannibal Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously voted to adopt the budget and authorized the $28.8 million spending plan for the coming school year. The budget is a $1.4 million or 4.4% increase over last year’s budget and includes the $20.3 million allotted to Hannibal from the state.

Salmon River Advisory Issued For Fishermen Today

Water's high on the Oswego River as tonight's potential thunderstorm rolls in. Terry Bennett, acting director of the Oswego County Emergency Management Office, has announced an advisory for anglers on the Salmon River due to higher water conditions today (April 19). Anglers should avoid fishing in or on the river until flows return to normal. As a precaution, the National Weather Service-Buffalo has issued a flood advisory for the Salmon River that is in effect until Saturday morning.
