DEC Announces Start Of Prescribed Fire Season

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today the agency will be conducting prescribed burns on DEC managed land in different areas of the state from late March to early May. The first burns will occur on Long Island. Prescribed fire is a tool used to manage fire-dependent ecosystems in a manner that develops a resilient natural balance of fire in the desired vegetation. These fires are regulated by law and regulation and require technical expertise to conduct the burns safely.

EPA Region 2 Announces Virtual Listening Session On PFAS Strategic Roadmap

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 2 will host a virtual listening session on March 30, 2023 to get feedback on EPA’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap from residents in EPA Region 2, which includes New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands communities and eight Indian Nations. In the session, EPA will provide information about EPA’s ongoing work under the PFAS Strategic Roadmap (2021-2024) and will ask for feedback on this work. In November 2022, EPA announced that the Agency would hold a series of virtual regional community engagement sessions in 2023 to fulfill a key commitment outlined in the PFAS Strategic Roadmap.

DEC Releases Draft Solid Waste Management Plan

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the release of the draft New York State Solid Waste Management Plan for a 60-day public comment period. The “New York State Solid Waste Management Plan: Building the Circular Economy Through Sustainable Materials Management” recommends actions to reduce the climate impact of solid waste and provides direction for New York’s waste reduction, reuse, recycling, collection, transportation, and disposal investments, policies, and practices over the next decade.
