The Campaign for Whiskey Island and Northern Great Bear – a Community Success

Friends of Great Bear and Central New York Land Trust announce the success of the campaign for Whiskey Island and Northern Great Bear, thanks to the local community who worked to preserve this land for recreation and conservation. On September 29, 130 acres of Great Bear Springs Recreation Area in Volney was transferred from private ownership to the nonprofit CNY Land Trust. The CNYLT will in turn transfer the land to the town of Volney to keep as part of Great Bear.

Jury Convicts Cicero Man Of Assault

At approximately 5:30 p.m. today (Oct. 5), an Oswego County jury convicted 32-year-old Chad R. Burman of Cicero, NY, of the felony offense of Assault in the Second Degree. The prosecution alleged that Burman assaulted and physically injured a 69-year-old man on June 3, 2016, in the parking lot of the Waterfront Tavern, a restaurant located along the Oneida River in Hastings.

Comedian Lucas Bohn Benefit To Boost Fulton Arts Project

Lucas Bohn has always been “very interested in comedy.” On Saturday he’ll use his talents to benefit the Fulton’s Future Project to build a better future through the arts. CNY Arts Center will host the national touring comedian at the Oasis at Thunder Island for “an evening of fun and celebration.” Assemblyman Will Barclay will serve as honorary chairperson. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Bohn is set to hit the stage at 8 p.m.

Local West Nile Virus Raises Some Concerns

Recently, Oswego County Health Director Jiancheng Huang confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus in Oswego. The report of the virus in this area has raised some concerns among students on the SUNY Oswego campus. “It’s scary how western medicine still can’t defeat old diseases,” SUNY Oswego Junior Cliff-Simon Vital said.

Oswego County Holds Highest Childhood Obesity Rate In State

Oswego County has the highest rate of childhood obesity in New York State and the adult obesity trends are higher county wide than state wide, according to the county health department. “In Oswego, 33.8 percent of adults are overweight or obese, compared to the New York state average of 24.6 percent,” said Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg.

Cold Case Tuesday: The New York State Police continue to investigate a missing persons case from 1997

The New York State Police continue to investigate the missing person case of 62-year-old John Sapienza. Sapienza has been missing since February 24, 1997, from St. Johnsville, NY. A friend reported him missing on February 27 after receiving a phone call from Sapienza’s wife that his vehicle was found abandoned in a grocery store parking lot in New Hartford, NY. A manager confirmed the van had been there for about four weeks.
