Somber Anniversary In Port City History
It was 60 years ago on Aug. 18 that three workers lost their lives during one of the final phases of the construction of Oswego’s water intake tunnel. A fourth man, one of the dozens of volunteers who mounted a rescue attempt, also died after being overcome by gas fumes in the tunnel. Rescue attempts were slowed because volunteers had to wade through thigh-high water for the first 1,000 feet or so of the tunnel.
