On July 6, Oswego City Police investigators arrested 45-year-old Bruce D. Williams of Oswego, following an investigation into a domestic incident. It is alleged that from July 1, at about 1 p.m., to July 4, at about 7 a.m., while at the defendant’s residence, Williams held an adult female victim, with whom he was familiar, against her will. He allegedly struck her and also raped her.
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on Thursday announced $23.5 million for projects to pave and repair 146.9 lane miles of state roads across Central New York this summer and fall. The infrastructure investment, which complements “Central NY Rising” – the region’s successful strategy to grow the economy and create new opportunities – includes projects in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties. The projects will be completed this year.
As Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul announced the winning projects for Oswego’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, she paused and apologized for taking so long. But, “there’s a lot of progress going on here!” she quickly added. State, local agencies will collaborate with Regional Economic Development Council to revitalize downtown, modernize infrastructure and boost the local economy. Speaking at the Children’s Museum of Oswego today (July 6), Hochul officially proclaimed the winning projects selected for the Port City as part of the state’s $100 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative.
UPDATE: On Wednesday at 11:38 p.m., A 2015 Western Star milk tanker operated by 38-year-old Charles T. Howard III, from Watertown, was traveling northbound on I-81 when he swerved to avoid striking deer on the highway. A 2002 Mercury Sable, operated by Corey E. Moore, 50, from Canton, was traveling north on I-81 when he was unable to avoid striking the tanker. Moore, along with two passengers in the vehicle, Gregg P. Williams, 58, from De Kalb Junction, NY, and Roderick C. Cota, 63, from Norwood, NY, were all pronounced deceased at the scene. Shortly thereafter, a 2011 Subaru, operated by Moon John Kim, 52, from Ellicott City, Maryland, was also traveling north on I-81 when he struck the same tanker. He too was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sometimes, when the message is just right, a little inspiration can go a long way. That was the case when local author, inspirational speaker, and entrepreneur Tim Conners came in to speak to a room of students at the Fulton Junior High School in May, just days before embarking on a quest to climb Mount Kilamanjaro. Inspired by Conners’ message and his determination to make a difference, the students wanted to show their support.
A Fulton man and his dog died Wednesday in a crash on Route 12. A motorcycle, operated by 53-year-old Robert Lightenfield of Fulton, collided head-on with another vehicle at about 7:09 p.m., according to State Police.
The Fulton Common Council declared the former Nestles site located at 555 S. Fourth St. “an imminent danger” at a regular meeting held Wednesday. After a long demolition process plagued with several interruptions, few buildings remain standing on the 24-acre site with piles of debris left scattered about. Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. said structurally compromised buildings and remaining asbestos are main contributors to the decision to declare the site a danger. With the approval of this resolution, the current contractor on site, Rowlee Construction, will be authorized to remain on site and continue working under the current contract.
The Save-A-Lot store located at 364 West First Street in Fulton is hosting a grand re-opening event. Re-opening as a locally owned grocery store by the previous owner of Hannibal’s former long running local grocery store the Village Market IGA, Jim Mirabito along with his wife, Cindy and daughter, Whitney remain dedicated to providing quality products with excellent customer service at affordable prices. Saturday, July 8, the Fulton Save-A-Lot will officially be honored under the Mirabito’s ownership with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled to commence at 11 a.m.
A year after they were sworn in as new Oswego school board members, Aimee Callen and James Bell took the oath of office again – this time as the new leaders of the board. In a brief reorganizational meeting July 5, the Oswego school board appointed its slate of officers for the 2017-2018 school year and swore in new members Brian Chetney and Brandon Lagoe and returning veteran Sam Tripp.
Officials at Michaud Residential Health Services, an eighty-nine bed nursing home located in the city of Fulton announced that they are pursuing a plan to cease operations and close within the year. The New York State Department of Health has reviewed and approved a comprehensive plan of closure submitted on behalf of Michaud Residential Health Services. The Department of Health approved plan of closure includes a targeted closing date on or about October 1, 2017.
