Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that work is under way on $22.7 million in highway improvements in Central New York, including a $10.8 million project to repair the bridges carrying I-81 over Route 11 in the town of Salina, with work scheduled to be completed this year. Several projects are set for Oswego County, also.
Saturday (April 22) is International Earth Day. The NYS Canal Corporation, in partnership with Parks and Trails NY, is sponsoring the beginning of 12th annual Canal Clean Sweep.This year, Minetto’s clean sweep will be on Saturday with volunteers meeting at 9 a.m. by the Town Hall, Route 48.
The Oswego City School District’s 2017-18 budget is nearly done. However, the tentative $82,938,392 spending plan still contains a 2.8 percent tax increase. “Our goal is to create a tax increase that will be supported by the community and I think we’re almost there,” Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey said Tuesday night. “We’ve made progress in the last week.”
The community will hold a candlelight vigil in honor of 39-year-old Amber Neivel whose body was recently found in the Oswego River. Neivel was a mother to two children. The community is hosting a candlelight vigil in her honor on Thursday, April 20.
Alan Jones was convicted of Depraved Indifference Murder after a jury trial for causing the death of Erin Maxwell. Jones’ murder conviction was subsequently reversed and reduced to Manslaughter 2nd and he was re-sentenced to a prison term of 5 to 15 years. “Thankfully, the parole board has consistently denied his application for release and he remains in state prison,” Oswego County DA Greg Oakes said. ” However, he will be appearing before the parole board again in June.”
For the second year, a Fulton family has taken the initiative to host an Easter egg hunt for children in the Fulton community. Last year, Robert Zentner, 26, and Char Zentner, 20, noticed that there was not anything for the kids to do in the Fulton community to celebrate Easter. Together, they decided to change that. The day before Easter, (April 15) the Zentners hosted their second Easter egg hunt event at Van Buren Park for all kids in the community.
Plans to stage the Bemelmans Festival next month (May 12-20) at the Fort Ontario Complex received a favorable recommendation at Monday night Physical Services Committee. The festival is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of World War I and 1917 deployment of Ludwig Bemelmans, author of Madeline Books, as a Private at Fort Ontario. The full council will consider the request next week.
An afternoon rain shower didn’t dampen the egg-citement for hundreds of children Saturday morning. Close to 600 children “hunted” for colorful plastic Easter eggs scattered around Oswego’s Breitbeck Park – mostly in plain sight.
If you’ve been traveling around the city of Fulton lately, you may have noticed a few changes. While the former building that housed Family Video is under construction, it has been confirmed that Auto Zone will be moving in. Family Video has relocated to 165 S. Second St.
