Dozens Honor ‘America’s First Supermodel’ in New Haven

Dozens of people from all over Upstate New York gathered in New Haven Town Hall recently to honor the late Audrey Munson, best known for being “America’s first supermodel.” Many people may have seen Audrey without even knowing, especially in the NYC area where she is proudly displayed throughout the city in numerous monuments and sculptures including Civic Pride, the second tallest statue in NYC where Munson’s full body sculpture sits at the very top.

Oswego Police Thwart Robbery Attempt

On Wednesday (June 15), at about 10:47 p.m., the Oswego Police Department was dispatched to Empower Federal Credit Union located at 100 George St. for a bank alarm. Upon their arrival they observed damage to a metal door that was still locked and secured. During their investigation loud banging was heard coming from the Compass Federal Credit Union located at 131 George St.

Without Help From NYS, Exelon Says It’ll Close NiMi Point 1

In a recent filing with the NYS Public Service Commission, Exelon said it would close Nine Mile Point 1 if it doesn’t get a guarantee from the state for a financial lifeline by September. New York’s proposed Clean Energy Standard includes a mechanism to compensate nuclear plants through zero emissions credits. However, the company said it couldn’t count on a CES that is “merely speculative.”

Fulton Council Raises Fees, Addresses Busy Agenda

The Fulton Common Council addressed a modest crowd at their most recent council meeting (June 7) to gather public opinion for the proposed rate change for building permit and other fees. Ultimately, the council unanimously passed the rate increase but not before hearing the reasoning behind the decision and public opinion on both sides of the discussion. “We’re very concerned, we don’t want our fees to be way up higher than other cities, we’re definitely not the highest. In 2005, we lowered them in hopes that it would bring a whole bunch of people in, but it didn’t,” said Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. Mayor Woodward asked Joe Fiumara, Director of Code Enforcement and Executive Director of the Fulton Community Development Agency to further explain the background of the decision to raise fees.

The small but mighty Phoenix community came together to address the devastating heroin epidemic hitting all over the nation, even in quiet, cozy neighborhoods like their own. H.O.P.E, Heroin Opioid Prevention Education, hosted a community forum at J.C. Birdlebough High School complete with an agency expo, multiple keynote speakers, and a diverse panel of specialists with a wide range in background and expertise to answer questions from the public.

Scriba Highway Chief Pleads Guilty; License To Drive Is Revoked

Michael Barry, the town of Scriba Highway Superintendent who was elected last November after failing to disclose his arrest for driving while intoxicated earlier that summer, plead guilty to a Class A Misdemeanor charge of Driving While Intoxicated in the Town of Brutus on June 8, according to the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.

Katko Legislation To Advance Designation Of Fort Ontario, Safe Haven To National Park Status Heads To House Floor For Vote

Today (June 15), legislation introduced by U.S. Representative John Katko, H.R. 4202, the Fort Ontario Study Act, was unanimously approved by the House Committee on Natural Resources. The bill advances the designation of Fort Ontario and the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum in Oswego towards National Park status.

Ann Marie Chalone-Leis and Patricia Chalone-Hardwick published the book based on the memories of co-author Gail Danziger Klein’s mother (Renee Danziger), an Auschwitz survivor.
