The Oswego County Legislature held its annual Youth Government Day recently and dozens of middle school students from around the county got the chance to take part in county government. Prior to the meeting, Legislator Shawn Doyle, of the county’s bicentennial committee, conducted a survey of the students. He asked the young students various questions about the county’s present and future.

Oswego, Fulton School Budgets Pass, Hayden, Lyons and Callen, Bell Elected to BOE

City residents turned out to their polling places today (May 17) to vote on the Fulton City School District 2016-2017 school budget and numerous other propositions including two open seats on the Board of Education. All propositions passed with a total of 967 voters. Oswego’s budget was also approved and two newcomers will join the school board.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico, and Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler today (May 17) announced the indictment of 72 people charged with operating two drug distribution rings: one that allegedly transported heroin, cocaine and narcotic pills between New York City and Syracuse; and a second that allegedly sold cocaine in the suburbs of Syracuse and in adjacent Oswego County.

Oswego Considering Assessment Management Plan For Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Common Council will consider a resolution next week to hire an organization to help create a plan to upgrade the Eastside Wastewater Treatment Plant so it meets DEC requirements. Mayor Billy Barlow requested council consideration of a pact regarding an Assessment Management Plan for the plant. The plan will enable the city to move forward responsibly with upgrades to the facility.

Second Annual Oswego County Olympiad Gets Bigger and Better

All ten Oswego County school districts were well represented in the second annual Oswego County Olympiad, giving nearly 400 special education students the chance to compete athletically in a wide variety of events. This year’s student athletes arrived at Phoenix High School where they excitedly got off their buses to crowds of family, friends, teachers, fellow students and school mascots awaiting their arrival, lined up to escort them to the competition field. Student athletes of all ages, developmental and physical abilities competed in a wide variety of events including track events such as the 50m and 100m dash, jumping events such as long jump and standing jump, field events such as shot-put, football and softball toss.
