CiTi Hosts 12th Annual Regional Awareness Program to Combat Distracted Driving

CiTi, the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation recently hosted the 12th annual Regional Awareness Program for young drivers to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. The three hour program, which recurs every year in early spring as warm weather arrives and prom season approaches, delivered powerful stories from victims of drunk driving as well as the current Oswego County District Attorney and offered numerous hands on demonstrations to the effects of distracted driving.

Approximately 1,500 African-Americans escaped slavery each year leading up to the Civil War. While some made Oswego County and Central New York their new home, many of them crossed into Canada to find freedom. The Underground Railroad was a network of homes or “way stations” for these freedom-seekers to take refuge on their journey. This map shows some of the many sites in Oswego County related to this cause, sometimes called the “Freedom Trail.”

Oswego County Bicentennial – ‘History Moment’ Commemorates Underground Railroad, Abolitionist Movement

Oswego County continues to celebrate its bicentennial with another “History Moment” from Oswego County Legislator Shawn Doyle, District 3, and chairman of the Oswego County Bicentennial Committee. In honor of Black History Month in February, his talk at the monthly Legislature meeting highlighted local black residents and the Underground Railroad movement that swept across the county.

State Officials Weigh In On New State Budget

Assemblyman Will Barclay said, The lack of transparency in this budget process was nearly incomparable. Bills were brought to lawmakers just hours before we were required to vote. Assemblyman Bob Oaks added, The state budget was finally adopted … after being negotiated behind closed doors and requiring a “message of necessity” from the governor to waive the ability of legislators and the public to take the normal three days to study and critically review the budget before it came up for a vote. Senator Patty Ritchie said, Just a few short months ago, we set out to craft a spending plan that strengthens the middle class, grows our economy and improves educational opportunities for students. Today, I’m proud to say we succeeded in achieving those goals, approving a new state budget that will help to build a better future for all New Yorkers.

First Rabies Clinic Of 2016 Draws a Crowd

Hundreds of people took advantage of the first rabies clinic of the year on Wednesday night to safeguard their pets from the rabies virus. “Rabies continues to be a threat in Oswego County,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director. Three wild animals so far this year have tested positive for the disease. The two most recent attacked unvaccinated pets.
