Last Bills Finally Conclude Long Overdue Budget

Last week, we wrapped up the budget at last. By no stretch can I or any lawmaker say that this budget is perfect, but in these difficult times, it represents considerable progress from where we were on April 1.
Local child abuse agencies in Onondaga and Oswego counties have each reported that instances of child abuse are on the rise. Research and history shows that when families and heads of households struggle economically, instances of child abuse and domestic violence increase.
This year’s legislative session has certainly had its share of frustrations, especially in regard to the state budget. With the vast majority of the budget completed, the end is in sight and I am looking forward to closing the process down.
Supporters of the U.S. Constitution’s 2nd Amendment right to bear arms provision got some welcome news from the U.S. Supreme Court last month when the court ruled that this constitutional right extends to every jurisdiction in the nation.
As I’ve said many times before, good government puts people ahead of politics. Elected representatives are not in office to serve a political party, but everyone. I’m proud of the fact that my office operates without regard to party affiliation and, of the more than 50 bills I sponsored that passed the Senate this year, all but a handful passed unanimously and not one passed along party lines.
At the heart of what it is to be an American is the recognition that no matter how difficult the problem we face, hard work will help us pull through.
