OSWEGO, NY — Operators returned Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 2 to full power this morning (May 7), following a planned refueling outage that started on April 11.

While the unit was offline, skilled technicians replaced nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel and performed thousands of inspections and maintenance activities.

Most of the work could not be completed while the unit was online.

To execute this important work, Exelon hired an additional 1,500 skilled workers, mostly from regional labor halls.

The additional workforce provided a significant boost to the local economy at a time when tourism is typically low.

“Exelon continues to invest in the future of Nine Mile Point,” said Site Vice President Pete Orphanos. “The station continues to generate safe, reliable electricity and deliver significant environmental and economic benefits to the region. Our thanks to the supplemental workers who helped us maintain and upgrade the plant to ensure long-term reliability.”

Nine Mile Point Unit 1 continued to generate electricity during the Unit 2 outage.

NMPNS generates enough electricity to power more than 1 million average American homes.

  1. Wonderful … now why doesn’t Exelon Corporation throw the Oswego City School District 4 or 5 million dollars to make up for the fact that its PILOT “agreement” enables them to pay far less than the assessed value of their property? … a form of corporate welfare the regular taxpayers of the community are not “entitled” … so Fran Hoefer is correct when he says greed is responsible for the condition we’re in … it’s just Fran vilifies the wrong people … it’s the greed of the Exelon Corporation … where are the Feel the Bern School Board candidates?! … Corporate greed and an inaccurate State aid formula which gives surrounding districts 20 million more dollars than Oswego (the State assumes that Oswego is actually getting the taxes for the assessed value of properties like where Exelon operates instead of making unfavorable PILOT agreements … as if this form of corporate domination of our region is the only possible way to employ the people of this region!) … and frankly electing Republicans Barclay and Ritchie in a Democratic state doesn’t help our schools … so we basically just need a radically different politics, economics, culture and society … that’s all 🙂
