Fort Ontario Hosts National Brigade of American Revolution Aug. 14 – 15

Hundreds of re-enactors are scheduled to present tactical weapons demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14-15, during the National Encampment of the Brigade of the American Revolution at Fort Ontario in Oswego. The event commemorates the important role Fort Ontario played in the nation’s War for Independence (1775-1783), said Paul Lear, Historic Site Manager. Children’s games, a colonial tavern, period music and other activities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tactical weapons demonstrations with an assault on the fort will be held at 2 p.m. both days.

God Save The King And George Washington

The recreated armies of King George III and General George Washington will converge on historic Fort Ontario in Oswego for two days of living history activities on Aug. 14-15. The National Encampment of BAR was last held at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in 1996 and will feature volunteer reenactors from around the United States and Canada.

Fort Ontario Will Open Saturday Now That State Lawmakers Have OK’d Money For Parks

Fort OntarioAt Fort Ontario, site manager Paul Lear said the gates will open Saturday, with a historical reenactor at the gate to greet them, volunteers to help guide them and General Brown, the site’s pet dog, roaming the grounds as usual.

“The coffee pot will be on and the flags will be up,” he told Oswego County Today.com.

State Lawmakers Eye Plan To Keep Fort Open

Save Fort Ontario“Significant action” was seen in the Assembly and Senate regarding the possibility of reopening Fort Ontario as well as several other state parks and historic sites that have fallen victim this spring to the state’s budget morass. It’s possible Oswego’s historic site could be open for Memorial Day Weekend.
