Late last week, I received notice from the New York State Education Department that the English Language Arts state testing in grades 3-8 would be occurring during what was scheduled as the 2012 spring recess of most Central New York school districts including our own.
The Oswego Fire Department will be conducting hydrant testing throughout the city during the next few months.
The state Board of Regents today may eliminate 13 of 16 Regents exams and end translations into any foreign language other than Spanish.
The only exams left would be one exam each in math, English and science. Exams would be given only once a year. The January and August exams would be eliminated.
Teachers and administrators in Fulton will spend a lot of time as a new school year begins trying to answer this question: What’s going on in third grade?
Almost across the board, state tests find Fulton’s 3rd graders performing at lower levels than students in the higher elementary grades.
Nearly 105,000 students asked for their results to be sent to one or more colleges or universities. 5,462 students — about 1 in every 20 students taking the exam — asked for their results to be sent to SUNY Oswego.
Wednesday afternoon, the city of Fulton received notice that its second day of water samples all came back negative for E. coli bacteria. Meeting the health department’s requirements for two consecutive testing days with clean samples, the city lifted the boil water advisory that had been in place since Saturday. With proof that the water is safe, Fulton officials say they are happy to get back to a normal routine.
