The auditorium at Lura M. Sharp Elementary School recently transformed into a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) village as fourth graders got a firsthand glimpse into the lives of Native Americans. For the students, who had just completed a unit on Native American studies, the Jan. 15 performance of “There Once was a Longhouse” reinforced the lessons they had learned in the classroom.
At the first Common Council meeting of the new year, Mercedes Niess continued to drive home the importance of caring for the former Cahill building. Last month, she shared a petition with more than 140 signatures “of people who want to urge the council to do whatever you can to care for that building.” This week she presented more to the council. The total now stands at more than 600.
Congressman John Katko today (Jan. 15) joined No Labels, a bipartisan congressional problem solvers group. The group’s membership consists of Democrats and Republicans from both the House and Senate who meet regularly to build trust across the aisle and to find common ground on issues before Congress.
Assemblyman Will Barclay reminded farmers of new grant monies available for innovative, emerging farms and the deadline for applications is Jan. 28. Barclay supported putting $1 million in the 2014-2015 state budget to fund the program. Eligible farms must be 150 acres or less and embrace inventive, sustainable agricultural techniques.
Oswego Speedway Eagles Fan Club, a volunteer non-profit organization formed several years ago with the sole purpose and intent of supporting drivers and owners that compete at Oswego Speedway, is excited to announce a new cast of officers, signaling the continuation of the club in 2015.
