While the monetary awards were given or promised based on completion of eligibility criteria to juniors and seniors, students who are freshmen and sophomores also received recognition for their academic achievement and outstanding character.
The school’s top point earners with the Accelerated Reader program earned a minimum of 100 points and scored a minimum of 80 points on each Accelerated Reader test in order to participate in the annual Pizza with the Principal celebration.
The 2017 senior athletes were honored during the Fulton Athletic Booster Club’s annual senior recognition banquet, held recently at The Oasis. As each senior athlete paraded alphabetically into the packed reception area, they were met with thunderous applause and cheers from guests, school administrators and Booster Club supporters.

More than 225 students in fifth through seventh grades who earned character awards since September were honored during a ceremony in the cafeteria June 1.
The seventh and eighth grade chorus and band students performed a full lineup of songs featuring several soloists as well as group numbers. Following the chorus performance, the band took the stage for a medley of songs under the direction of Dave Frateschi.

With the end of the 2016-17 school year approaching, local story reader Jim McKenna encouraged Volney Elementary students to remember one thing: good books are everywhere. He emphasized emotion and actions as he read aloud the first chapter of “How to Steal a Dog” by Barbara O’Connor and a couple of short stories to students in grades kindergarten through six.
