Council Eyes Amendment Targeting Emergency Work

At its meeting Monday night, the Administrative Services Committee recommended an amendment to the section of the city code regarding the issuance or renewal of building permits. “An issue has arisen regarding a property that is delinquent in taxes … the work that needs to be done is structural work that is required; it’s a danger, so we’re trying to work out an agreement,” City Attorney Gay Williams explained.

A Look At Drug Use in Oswego County

For many residents in Oswego County, it seems as though they are learning of a new drug arrest almost weekly. This leaves many people questioning why there seems to be such a drug problem in our area. While the issue with drugs is not just a local problem, as it is seen on a national level as well, Oswego County has enacted many ways to combat the issue such as the Oswego County Drug Task Force team and resolutions such as drug court for drug related arrests.

County Legislature Approves Creation Of Land Bank

At its meeting Thursday, the Oswego County Legislature approved the formation of and incorporation of the Oswego County Land Bank Corporation. Its mission is to help communities combat deterioration by facilitating the return of vacant, abandoned and tax delinquent properties to productive use in order to eliminate the harms and liabilities caused by such properties and lessen the burden of government and act in the public interest.

Council Seeks Funds For Lighthouse Project

The council authorized the community development director to submit the State and Municipal Facilities Program Application to Assemblyman Will Barclay regarding the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse Restoration Project. The US government awarded ownership of the lighthouse to the city in 2009. And, since then, there has been a grassroots effort to restore and preserve the landmark.
