Continuing on from last week’s column about the story of Jack in the Box and making 2018 the Year of Kindness, we had planned to tell you today about how the Oswego County Humane Society can help when you have a pet that needs a home and you think you may have run out of options. And we will get to that eventually, but today, in light of the weather, we want to talk about the issue of apparently homeless pets out in the cold. We all know that cold like we are experiencing now can kill animals. So we are asking all of you to do the right thing.

Oswego County Joins the Fight Against Manufacturers of Prescription Opioid Painkillers

Simmons Hanly Conroy law firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of Oswego County against pharmaceutical companies and physicians over the aggressive and fraudulent marketing of prescription opioid painkillers that has led to a drug epidemic in the county and throughout the nation. The county seeks relief in the complaint that includes compensatory and punitive damages, for the millions of dollars it spends each year to combat the public nuisance created by the drug companies’ deceptive marketing campaign that misrepresents the safety and efficacy of long-term opioid use.

County Legislature Gets Organized For 2018

In a brief meeting Thursday, the Oswego County Legislature got ready to tackle business in 2018 with some new legislators and a new chairman.

Former chairman Kevin Gardner was sworn in a the new county tresurer. Shane Broadwell, majority leader in 2017, was named as the chairman of the Oswego County Legislature for 2018.

Fulton Block Builders Receive 2018 Grant, Announce Informational Meeting

The Richard S. Shineman Foundation’s largest third round grant award was given to Fulton Block Builders for its 2018 Block Challenge program. The grassroots organization in Fulton initiated a very successful 2017 Healthy Neighborhood revitalization program, modeled after the Oswego Renaissance Association’s highly successful project. The $100,000 award is a matching grant payable in the spring of 2018 following completion of fundraising in Fulton. There will be a community informational session to answer your questions about the 2018 Fulton Block Builder application process on January 17 at River Vista Conference Center, 810 S. First St., Fulton, at 6 p.m.

ORA 2018 Neighborhood Grants Applications Available Online

The Oswego Renaissance Association announced the availability of the pre-applications for the 2018 grant year. There are three Neighborhood Grants available from the ORA: the Block Challenge Grant, Paint Oswego Grant and the Pride Grant. The ORA has been engaged in a multi-year, multi-pronged revitalization strategy for in four targeted neighborhoods in Oswego since 2014. More than $2 million in documented private capital has been leveraged into Oswego neighborhoods, and hundreds of homeowners have participated.

Fulton Common Council Optimistic for 2018

On the first day of 2018, an inaugural meeting of the Fulton Common Council swore in four returning and two new city councilors, a new Common Council President, and rang messages of optimism and excitement for the city’s future.
Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. started the meeting with a few of the goals he intends to continue prioritizing throughout the year including the continued development of the remaining 22 acres of the Nestle site, the ongoing dredging of Lake Neatahwanta, and the push for LED street lighting to name a few.
