First Day Hike: Military Musicology Walking Tour at Fort Ontario

Friends of Fort Ontario AmeriCorps staffer Corey King will lead a unique First Day Hike at 10 a.m. New Year’s Day around the 75-acre Fort Ontario National Registered District. Hikers will register and assemble inside the old stone fort and march about one mile at a moderate pace around the buildings, grounds, foundations, roads, and locations of battles and significant events in the fort’s 263-year history.

Oswego District Plans Large Capital Project, March Vote Set

Members of the Oswego School Board got a glimpse Tuesday night of a proposed multi-million capital project aimed at refurbishing the district’s aging schools. The projected cost of the plan is $60,180,000. Local funds to be applied total $4,000,000. State building aid is expected to pay for 63.4 percent of the work. A public vote is tentatively set for March 6.

Mayor Barlow Announces Changes in Operation, Cost Savings at Oswego DPW

Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Dec. 19) the creation of a new schedule at the city of Oswego Department of Public Works, a move that turns the department to a twenty-four hour, seven days a week operation for the months of December through March. Mayor Barlow has now implemented three different rotating shifts Monday through Sunday, a change the mayor says will surely decrease the amount of overtime within the department while also expediting the snow removal process and help with snow plowing efficiency.

Fulton Board of Ed Considering Options After Hayden Resigns

The Fulton Board of Education has discussed each of three options to replace a recently resigned board member, leaving a split decision. Last week, board member Paula Hayden submitted a formal resignation letter effective immediately, as board president David Cordone cited personal reasons necessitating her to step aside. Hayden had been a board member since her election to the position in May 2016. Her term would expire in June of 2019. The remaining six board members considered each of three options recommended by the district’s law firm and the New York State School Board Association.

Early Morning Crash in Tully Injures Fulton Man

State Police in Lafayette are investigating an accident that occurred on Interstate 81 in the town of Tully. The investigation has revealed that at approximately 7 a.m. today (Dec. 18), a 2002 Chevrolet Propane delivery truck, operated by James P. Fyffe, 54, from Fulton, was traveling southbound on I-81 when he exited the west shoulder of the roadway and struck a tree.

Oswego Woman Trains For Cross-Country Benefit Sojourn

Kristine Gillingham owns Joslin Farms and Bakery in Oswego. “It is my busy season for Italian cookies and goat milk lotion,” she said. However, in the back of her mind, she’s making big plans for the coming year. “I have always had a dream of walking across the United States, from Oswego to Washington DC and then on to Crater Lake in Oregon. I have always dreamed of going to Crater Lake. To me it’s serenity; the most beautiful place,” she said. Her journey will help raise funds and awareness for youngsters suffering from epilepsy.
