Poverty, Opioid Crisis Go Hand In Hand, Says Oswego Mayor

In order to fight the importation, selling and usage of opioids in the Port City, the poverty crisis must be fought as well, said Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow. “We are trying to implement programs that will better position people from the start,” Barlow said. “If people are on the right track and feel good about themselves and have children, they’re taking the children to school, they’re going to work, they’re less likely to fall into that trap.” In Oswego City, 29 percent of people live in poverty, according to a 2017 Oswego needs assessment done by consultants at CGR Inc. The assessment was part of the Learn, Identify, Focus and Transform Oswego anti-poverty program established by the city and Oswego County Opportunities.

Two charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child

The New York State Police in Pulaski announce the arrest of two men, one an Oswego County Legislator, 51-year-old Shawn P. Doyle of 85 Lake St., Pulaski, and 73-year-old John James Maroney of 185 Leavitt Road, New Haven. The investigation commenced when the parents of a 15-year-old reported what they believed was an inappropriate relationship between their son and Doyle and Maroney.

Fatal Oswego Fire Under Investigation – Victim Identified

UPDATE: Five people, from two of the apartments, were able to escape after being alerted by police officers. One man, Edward Babcock, 54, was unable to evacuate his apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes of the call for help. On arrival, firefighters encountered intense fire from a second-floor apartment.

Oswego Council OKs Legal Action Against Delinquent Borrowers

The Port City will soon begin legal action regarding four borrowers that have overdue Community Development Office loans. City Attorney Kevin Caraccioli said it would be nice to see voluntary compliance on the foursome’s part. Going to court to recoup the unpaid funds could take months, he admits. The group owes approximately $160,000 overall. Initiating legal action against the four certainly sends a message out to others that the city of Oswego is serious about collecting money that it’s owed, he said.

Woman Charged With Sex Abuse

Amanda Squadrito, 21, of 3446 CR 22, Richland, was arrested for two counts of first-degree sex abuse, a class D felony, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor. The arrest stems from incidents that occurred in the town of Richland between June and August 2017. She allegedly subjected some individual less than 11 years of age to sexual contact.
