SUNY Oswego University Police Issues Missing Person Report

Natalie A. Smith, a VISTA employee (Volunteers in Service to America – a program of the Corporation for National & Community Service’s AmeriCorps) assigned to SUNY Oswego, was reported missing to Oswego State University Police on Friday, June 9. Smith was last seen traveling in her vehicle (a blue 2006 Chevrolet Impala with New York registration / plate – HNS 4758) eastbound on the New York State Thruway early Monday morning, June 5.

Oswego Public Library Celebrates 160th Anniversary

Gerrit Smith was an abolitionist, women’s rights activist, educator and wealthy landowner. He owned property in his home region of central Madison County and elsewhere, including vast holdings in Oswego County. He started the Oswego Public Library (the castle on the hill). It opened its doors for the first time in 1857, making it now America’s oldest public library still in its original building. The library, located at 120 E. Second St., near Oneida Street, marked the occasion with an anniversary celebration on Wednesday.

Work By Residents Gets Underway in 2017 Block Challenge

The work is starting and Fulton Block Builders are happily writing checks to residents. Audrey and Chuck Avery just finished repairing their side porch and replacing the rotted floor. “Chuck and I have to say that the experience with the Fulton Block Builders was awesome. We were so pleased with Heather, Alyssa, Penny and Linda. We were glad we could obtain the funding for our side porch, which was in desperate need of replacement. All our neighbors who are participating feel the same way about this wonderful organization. We thank FBB so much and look forward to working with them in the future,” said Audrey.

G. Ray Bodley to Implement New Seminar Course

A unanimous decision by the Fulton City School District Board of Education will allow district leaders to move forward with the implementation of a new course at the high school. Seminar, a graded half credit course, will be held every other day for 40 minutes following similar guidelines of a former advisory program in which students meet with one teacher for the duration of their four years. The course will be implemented for incoming ninth and tenth grade students in its first year although the goal of district officials is to eventually phase it in for all grade levels at G. Ray Bodley High School.

Pam Caraccioli, deputy to the SUNY Oswego president for external partnerships and economic development, this spring earned two honors: a regional award for accomplished and community-minded women and a statewide board membership. State Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, named Caraccioli a 2017 Woman of Distinction, an honor that the senator bestows “recognizing outstanding leaders who are achieving success in their careers, devoting time to volunteer causes in their communities and more.”

Broadwell Hospitality Group To Manage Transient Dockage

The Broadwell Hospitality Group is a force along the Port City’s waterfront. Now, the entrepreneurs would like to branch out into the waterway. At last week’s Administrative Services Committee, Mike Riley, Purchasing Agent, said BHG submitted a response to an advertised Request for Proposals to manage transient dockage along East Linear Park. The council approved the request at Monday’s meeting.

State Police Seek Public Assistance With Locating 2 Women and A Young Child

UPDATE: On June 13, 2017, The New York State Police responded to the area of Route 80 and Gatehouse Road in the town of Tully to search for the missing individuals when a Trooper discovered damage to the guard rail and a stop sign. Further investigation led to the discovery of the missing vehicle submerged in the Gatehouse Pond. The bodies of 34-year-old Jamie A. Bell, 26-year-old Melissa M. Avery and 5-year-old, Maryssa F. Houston were located inside the vehicle.
They had been reported missing on June 13.

Susan McBrearty Announces Candidacy For First Ward Councilor

After thirty years of working, volunteering, and raising children in Oswego, Susan McBrearty is running for Common Council in the First Ward. Calling this a “critical time” for the city, McBrearty says Oswego needs to maximize the opportunity presented by the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and implement a carefully considered waterfront development project.

The new interpretive panel, as well as the refugee memorial which was dedicated in 1981, are both situated at the former site of a major intersection in the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter. Located between the living quarters, dining hall, and recreational and administrative facilities, it was an important meeting place in the daily lives of the nearly 1,000 refugees that were housed in the shelter. World Refugee Day Observance Planned At Fort Ontario

An outdoor interpretive panel describing the historical significance of the World War II Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter will be unveiled at Fort Ontario State Historic Site as part of worldwide observances of United Nations World Refugee Day on, June 20. An introductory program and unveiling of the panel begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a short walking tour of the former shelter led by historian Rebecca Fisher.

Oswego Council Updated On ‘Complete Streets’ Project

Prior to the start of Monday night’s Common Council meeting, Kimberly Baptiste, AICP project manager, for Bergmann Associates, the project consultant, presented an overview of the potential for Bridge Street. Over the past several months, the “Complete Streets” process involved an evaluation of the Route 104 corridor in the context of providing safe, convenient access and mobility for users of all ages and abilities. Members of the public, people of all ages and abilities, made several recommendations to the plan.
