More than 125 volunteers will “Brave the Shave” this Sunday as they raise money to beat childhood cancers at this year’s 10th annual S. Baldrick’s Day in Oswego County. With more than $30,000 showing on this year’s website, the ten-year total of donations raised at Oswego events is more than $510,000.
U.S. Congressman, John Katko visited Fulton recently to address a local and nationwide epidemic, the use and abuse of heroin, opioids and synthetic drugs. Katko, representing the 24th Congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives was joined by a panel of local leaders, experts, and personal victims to the effects of addiction.
At about 10:05 a.m. today State Police stopped a vehicle on State Route 690 in VanBuren for a traffic violation. The operator wasn’t able to provide identification and gave a name and date of birth. Investigation at the scene revealed he had provided a false name and date of birth, and he was positively identified as Thomas Simmons, of Hannibal, police said. Further investigation revealed he was also allegedly in possession of heroin.
Fourteen not-for-profit organizations received grants totaling $340,000 from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation in the first of three 2016 grant rounds at its March board meeting. Projects reach a wide range of people and organizations that focus on community revitalization, education, arts and culture, and human services.
At about 2:09 a.m. today (April 6), State Police stopped a vehicle on State Route 48 in the town of Granby for erratic operation and speeding. Investigation at the scene revealed the driver, Kristin J. Anderson, 31, of Liverpool, was allegedly intoxicated.
The driver, Deanna J. Wettering, 35, of Fulton, was found to allegedly be in possession of several prescription pills without a valid prescription, including Adderall, Lyrica, and clonazepam. The vehicle’s passenger, Kristina R. Serio, 33, also of Fulton, was found to be in possession of Adderall and hydrocodone pills without a prescription, as well as heroin, police said.

Investigators report Brown crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic striking a 2008 Ford F150 pickup truck being operated by Josiah P. Robin, 20, of 10641 State Route 90, Locke, NY, head-on in the eastbound lane. Robin reported died at the scene.
The tentative 2016-17 budget for the Oswego City School District has cut the fat – and then some. “Nobody likes reductions … I hate these reductions,” Dr. Dean Goewey, superintendent, said Tuesday night after unveiling his updated budget plan. The $79,510,611 budget proposal is less than the current budget and less than the 2014-15 budget. However, the cuts are severe. Many positions have been targeted for reduction at all levels within the district.
