Several Schools Closed Thursday Due To Snow

Due to the inclement weather and the outlook for the up to a foot or more of snow in some areas: Schools are closed in Oswego, Fulton and Hannibal today (Feb. 25). In Hannibal, the musical will be at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Also closed around the county are Central Square, Mexico, BOCES (including evening classes), Phoenix, and Pulaski.

UPDATE:  Fulton is canceling tonight’s special Board of Education meeting to review its construction projects.

As of 9:30 a.m., a travel advisory has been issued for Cayuga County urging no unnecessary travel.

Fulton School Budget: $1.2 Million in Proposed Cuts Isn’t Half Enough

So far, there’s as much as $1.2 million in cuts being proposed: A half million dollars saved because of retirements; cuts in buying textbooks and a host of smaller purchases; and eliminating 8 jobs.

In an average year, $1.2 million in spending cuts would produce a tax cut or, at worst, no increase. This isn’t an average year.

Lanigan Elementary’s Closed Wing Should Reopen Wednesday

When school resumes on Wednesday, there’ll be big changes at Fulton’s Lanigan Elementary School.

A renovated wing of the building is expected to be open for business. It’s been closed since the beginning of the school year so the former open classrooms could be converted into regular classrooms and a new media center could be created.

School Budget Situation Goes From Bad To ‘Bleak’

School officials from around the region met in Onondaga County Saturday for a breakfast meeting with their state legislators. At the same time, a publication sent to school board members arrived, containing a commentary from the leader of Democrats in the state Legislature, Sheldon Silver. The message from both was clear: Expect cuts in state aid to schools.

“It’s not a surprise, but it’s rather troubling,” said Fulton Superintendent of Schools Bill Lynch.
