Hannibal School Board Agenda For Tonight’s Meeting

The Board of Education will take up the long-running discussion of a possible land acquisition.  Also tonight: a board member’s desire for a Junior ROTC program will come up, as will a discussion about setting up an educational foundation and a board member’s investigation of a consolidation plan in a nearby county.

Little-Known Alternative Location School Program Is Keeping Students From Quitting

Kristina Rathbun works with tutor Ryan Patrick at the district's alternative location program at the Education Center. "It teaches kids that are going to quit school and brings them back to school and teaches them what they need to learn so they can go on with their life," she said about the program.

Kristina Rathbun was going to quit school.  A straight A student whose grades sank because of problems with other students, she thought the only alternative was to leave.  Instead, she landed in a little-known district program for students with poor grades, attendance or behavior.  She and many of the nearly two dozen other students in the program are in the midst of remarkable turnarounds.

Staff Cuts Almost Inevitable If Fulton School Budget Is To Come Down, Committee Hears

The draft reviewed Tuesday night by a committee of district administrators, Board of Education members and several members of the public raises spending 3.4% but requires a 6.6% increase in the tax levy. That’s down from a 7.8% tax levy increase in the first draft of the budget, reviewed two weeks ago.

Superintendent of Schools Bill Lynch stresses that this is just a draft, and that the increases in the current draft are not acceptable.

Fulton’s Board of Education tonight holds its second workshop on its budget for the next school year. The public is welcome to attend.
