The people who live in the tiny Oswego County town are taking on federal officials in an attempt to save their post office. The U.S. Postal Service has been losing money for years. It is looking to close unprofitable postal offices, most of which are in small rural towns.
These programs are responsible for operating more than 48,000 classrooms in every state and practically every county in the country. Since 1999, more than 4,000 children have been students of Head Start Preschool in Oswego County.
Police say that at about 7:00 p.m. Saturday night, Katie D. Herchberger, 25, of 362 County Route 30, Williamstown was driving a horse and buggy along County Route 30 when the buggy’s left wheel was hit by a vehicle. The buggy ran off the road and hit a tree. The car drove off.
Head Start was created in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson as an eight week summer program for young children of low-income families. Over the years it has undergone many changes. It is now a year-long preschool program that provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to children and their families.
“This is a great example of a community coming together,†said Legislature Chairman Barry Leemann. “The playground is a great addition to this area of the county.â€Â
The Oswego County Sheriff’s Department says Joshua A. Spicer, 14, of 39 Beaver Lodge Road, Altmar was swimming in the lake at midafternoon when someone found him unresponsive in the water. Police and rescue workers were called at about 3:40 p.m.
