I would like to take this opportunity to recognize our extraordinary Fresh Air volunteers, host families, and supporters in the New York Lakes region. Fresh Air host families open their hearts and homes, and offer a child an opportunity to see the world through a new lens. In turn, our host families tell us how much they learn and gain from the children they host. Many children return summer after summer and develop lifelong friendships with their host families.
The Oswego County Historical Society proudly presents a Classic Movie Night event in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Richardson-Bates House Museum. The popular Alfred Hitchcock classic film “Notorious” will be featured on October 12 at 7 p.m. in the historic landmark Oswego Theatre at 138 W. Second St.
The Oswego County Falls Prevention Coalition “has your back” if you are a senior (or caring for a senior) who has experienced a fall or is at risk of falling. The coalition has information on programs to improve balance, identify proactive measures, and increase your confidence in falls prevention. It serves Oswego County residents by providing information on services that are available in the community to help prevent falls and increase balance.
For adults who are isolated or are experiencing limitations due to a functional impairment such as a stroke, or cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia-related illnesses, the opportunity to engage in regular physical activities or exercise can be limited. But thanks to a new program recently opened and now serving older adults in Oswego County, exercise and physical activities structured around social interaction is built right into the daily schedule.
At Mexico Elementary School, students and staff members embody the school district’s core belief that the school is the heart of the community. Love for one another, kindness and compassion have always been integral parts of the school so when Hurricane Harvey recently destroyed people’s lives, homes and hope, Mexico Elementary students stepped up to lend a helping hand and open their hearts.
The Hannibal Historical Society will sponsor Hannibal History Day on October 14 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Hannibal Community Center on Oswego Street. On that date, the society will introduce a self-guided walking tour of the village of Hannibal.
Karrie Damm, executive director of the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County, announced that Connie Dumas has been named the Outreach and Prevention Advocate for the CAC. A new position for the CAC, the outreach and prevention advocate will work closely with CAC partner agencies regarding best practices for the community prevention of child abuse and fatalities.
The Fulton Junior High School open house was a huge success. Principal Chris Leece introduced himself and Assistant Principal Debbie Stuetz before he told seventh and eighth grade families how encouraged he was by their attendance at the event.
