Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, freshmen and sophomores only have been scheduled every other day with the 40-minute Seminar course, which seeks to build relationships between teachers and students, personalize student education, further develop students’ soft skills and create a structured, supportive environment.
Oswego resident Matthew Liepke, MD, has been promoted to Colonel in the New York Army National Guard. Liepke, was promoted during a September 15 ceremony at the New York National Guard headquarters.

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, Wednesday (Sept. 20), announced that the team has signed left wing Erik Cole to a ceremonial contract. Cole subsequently announced his retirement from his playing career in hockey. Following Cole’s announcement, Hurricanes President Don Waddell named him as team ambassador.
The Fulton Lions Club has announced that it will host its 5th annual Mane Event comedy night with nationally known comedians Moody McCarthy and Paul Kozlowski on October 20, at the Fulton Polish Home. All proceeds raised will benefit community members in need.
Quilt With Passion brought to Oswego by long-time community leader Julie Burger, officially opened September 1 at 142 W. Second St.
Burger is a 34-year veteran of teaching in the Oswego City School District, most recently retiring as the principal of Leighton Elementary. For the past 14 years, she and her two partners have operated a long-arm quilting business known as Quilts Complete!, a quilt finishing service. The newest adventure in Burger’s “retirement” plan is opening Quilt With Passion.
The city of Fulton and the Fulton Police Benevolent Association representing the Fulton Police Department have reached a mutual agreement for a five-year contract. Negotiations have been ongoing between the two parties since the previous contract expired on December 31, 2014. The current contract will be effective retroactive to the day following the previous contract’s expiration, January 1, 2015. Read the full article for details on the contract agreement.
Firefighters were on scene for nearly 12 hours Tuesday (September 19) as they battled a commercial structure fire in Fulton. Fulton Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 807 S. First St. within three minutes of the call received at 6:50 a.m. The scene was entirely cleared at approximately 6:30 p.m., according to FFD Assistant Chief Shane Laws.
Isabella A. James was born in Oswego Hospital on September 10, 2017, at 8:40 p.m.
