SUNY Chancellor King Marks Hunger Action Month And Launches $1 Million In SUNY Campus Programs To Combat Food Insecurity

In recognition of September as Hunger Action Month, State University of New York Chancellor John B. King, Jr. today announced $1 million of dedicated ongoing state-supported operating funding to provide sustainable financial assistance for SUNY campus food pantries. The funding is part of New York State’s historic investment in higher education approved by Governor Hochul and state legislators in the 2023/24 Enacted State Budget. In Chancellor King’s State of the University Address, he outlined his vision to combat food insecurity by investing in food, supplies, and staff time to help ensure the food pantries remain stocked, open, and accessible to students in need.

Gillibrand Announces Legislation To Prevent Jobseekers From Being Kicked Off Snap Benefits

Today. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand held a video press conference to announce her Training and Nutrition Stability Act, legislation to help prevent jobseekers from losing their SNAP benefits. The bill would rectify loopholes within the SNAP Employment and Training program that can cause a SNAP recipient to lose benefits due to receiving wages as part of their job training. By doing so, it would help ensure that SNAP recipients continue to receive critical nutritional assistance while gaining skills, working to secure employment, and eventually achieving self-sufficiency.

Schumer, Gillibrand Announce Over $3.5 Million For Fire Departments Across New York State

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $3,558,183.01 in federal funding for several fire departments across New York State. Specifically, the funding will be used to provide protective gear, training, and supplies to emergency personnel across 33fire departments. This critical federal funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program.

RSV Vaccine Appointments Now Available For Those Age 60+

Kinney Drugs has opened RSV vaccination appointments for those age 60 and older at all 96 locations in New York and Vermont. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common, highly contagious respiratory virus that typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms. In older adults, RSV can cause life-threatening pneumonia and bronchiolitis (swelling of the lungs’ small airways). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year in the U.S., RSV causes up to 120,000 hospitalizations and up to 10,000 deaths among those 65+. In this region of the country, RSV season starts in the fall and peaks in winter.
