Spring 2017 President’s List Announced at SUNY Canton

The Chester S. McGown Award is given to a senior who demonstrates consistency in leadership as provided by Chester S. McGown through his 35-year presidency that spanned a period of enormous change through two World Wars and the intervening Great Depression.
Established by Dr. Harry Shabanowitz, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, in memory of his father, the award recognizes graduates showing outstanding achievement in the field of mathematics.
Today (June 16), Assemblyman Will Barclay called for the swift passage of legislation to assist those facing property damage incurred as a result of flooding on Lake Ontario. Property owners along the southern and eastern shores of the lake have faced record-high lake levels, resulting in enormous amounts of property damage.
Scholarships and awards totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars were presented to juniors and seniors who met a variety of criteria. Award-winners were recognized for academic excellence, scholastic achievement, character, leadership, musical talents and more.
At G. Ray Bodley High School, English class has become more than reading literature and writing papers; it has taught several studies about overcoming adversities.
Several students were recently honored for exceeding expectations in the cafeteria at Fairgrieve Elementary School. The Golden Spoon honorees were recognized by school breakfast and lunch employees who noted stellar behavior and manners from all recipients.
Several Fairgrieve Elementary School students were recently honored for exceeding expectations in their classroom throughout the month of June. Awardees were recognized by their classroom teacher for being a good role model to their peers.
The Migrant Education Tutorial and Support Services Program students, community supporters and families were recently honored as abra caminos. Translated as “path openers,” METS Director Paul Gugel said the affectionate term perfectly described honorees at the recent METS’ annual graduation and recognition dinner because they pushed themselves to set and exceed goals.
Fairgrieve Elementary students who met or exceeded their Accelerated Reader goals for the 2016-2017 school year were rewarded with an afternoon of fun.
