UPDATE: Erie Street is now re-open for vehicular traffic. West Eighth Street between Erie and Niagara streets remains closed.
Erie Street, from West Fifth Street to West Eighth Street, and West Eighth Street between Erie and Niagara streets in the city of Oswego are temporarily closed due to a possible oil spill, according to city police.
The pumpkins were GREAT. The weather, not so great. And yet, dozens of hardy souls braved the cold temperatures and heavy rain for the annual Great Pumpkin Festival’s weigh off. Alan Nesbitt’s entry totaled 1,268 pounds to slip past John Miller’s 1,217.5 pumpkin.
An Oswego resident and a Scriba resident were recently charged in connection with ongoing drug investigations. The two arrests, police said, aren’t related.
A source in a position to know tells Oswego County Today that a tentative agreement has been reached between Entergy and the union at its FitzPatrick nuclear plant.
There are no details available of the agreement yet, but the deal will prevent a strike by workers when the contract expires tonight.
As part of the tentative deal, the current contract has been extended a week to allow union workers to vote on the agreement.
The union and company are expected to release more details later Friday.
At this week’s meeting, councilors approved use of public space. And, they also give several city employees permission to travel to training seminars.
UPDATED with Harborfest’s press release Oswego Harborfest is looking for a new executive director. The board terminated Tom Van Schaack at its last meeting. He said he was informed that the board was looking to take the festival in a new direction and “reenergize” the festival with the 25th edition of Harborfest coming up next year.
After hearing an update on the Race To The Top initiative for nearly an hour Tuesday night, members of the Oswego City School District’s board of education agreed with the plan in principle. However, the part about pulling educators out of the classroom to be trained didn’t sit well with the board.
“While there is less EEE activity around the county since we conducted aerial spraying, the virus is still present at our test sites,” said Dr. Dennis Norfleet, public health director of the Oswego County Health Department.
The fall semester isn’t a month old yet and already some westside Oswego residents are fed up with the rowdy late-night behavior of some SUNY Oswego students. Speaking at the public session of Monday’s Common Council meeting, two residents asked the council to give the police department whatever it needed to put an end to the bad behavior.
