The Festival of Sail is under way in the Port City. The three-day event, featuring a trio of tall ships visiting Oswego, runs through Sunday on the west pier, next to the H. Lee White Marine Museum.
The Physical Services Committee paves the way for the mural project to continue this summer in Oswego. The mural project began as a youth-focused initiative, with the design concept and implementation directed by local young people with the support of the mural committee. The program is also a means to address graffiti issues.
Mayor Randolph Bateman announced today June 24) that he has appointed Jeffrey M. McCrobie as Chief of the Oswego Fire Department. McCrobie will replace Chief Joseph Perry who is retiring effective June 26. Mayor Bateman also announced that Donald T. Dowd II will replace McCrobie as First Assistant Fire Chief.
At about six feet tall and weighing more than 200 pounds, he can be an imposing figure at the Oswego Police Station. However, while walking through some city crosswalks, he was virtually invisible to many drivers. Several drivers this week told police they didn’t notice the police officer acting as a pedestrian going through the crosswalk in front of them as part of a program to increase safety.
When Governor David Paterson ordered the closure of Fort Ontario State Historic Site, nine-year-old Christopher Colasurdo of Oswego answered the call to action. The fourth grader at Fitzhugh Park School raised more than $1,000 to support the fort through a “hat day†fundraiser.
One of Trinity Catholic School’s smallest sixth grade classes graduated Tuesday night during a commencement celebration and mass at St. Joseph’s Church. The ceremony marked a stop along one part of the 12 students’ journey, but was also the starting point to the next part of their journey – middle schools in Oswego and other parts of the county.
At Monday night’s meeting of the Administrative Services Committee, Mike Smith, DPW commissioner, requested discussion regarding the purchase of several pieces of equipment. He gave councilors a list of five vehicles and sander box that he’d like to purchase. “This isn’t a wish list. These are things that I really need,†he said.
UPDATE:Â A memorial service will be held Wednesday. The Oswego City Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own today. The department sadly reports the sudden passing of Firefighter Scott Davis, according to Assistant Chief Jeff McCrobie.

Last week, at the fourth farmers’ market of the season, many people enjoyed the beautiful weather and the products the market has to offer; though some concerns linger regarding the new, earlier schedule.
